How to Fix Common Issues When Adding Your Card to Google Pay

If you're having trouble adding your card to Google Pay, here’s a list of common issues - and how to solve them.

Message shown:
“This card can’t be added to Google Pay. Try a different card.”

Set your Google Play country/region region to Puerto Rico:
Go to: Google Pay → Settings → Country and profile → Puerto Rico

Google Pay app doesn’t show card option at all

Change your device’s language and region to English - Puerto Rico:

Settings → System → Language & input → Language → English

Settings → System → Region → Puerto Rico

Didn’t receive verification code

📱 If you chose SMS:

  • Some mobile operators - especially in sanctioned countries - may block or fail to deliver SMS.

  • Try verifying via email instead.

📧 If you chose Email:

  • Check your inbox and spam/junk folder.

Still no code?

  • Contact our support team via the in-app chat so we can help you solve the issue.

Outdated Android OS or Google Pay app

Make sure your phone is running the latest Android version:
Settings → System → System update

Update the Google Pay app via the Play Store.

Google Account not verified or restricted

Your Google account must be:

  • Fully verified

  • Not a child or restricted account

  • Not part of a Family Link setup

VPN or location conflict

  • Use a stable internet connection.

  • If you’re not in a country where Google Pay is supported (check the list here), try using a VPN set to the U.S. during setup.

Billing address mismatch

Try using this Puerto Rico based address during card setup:

Street: 123 Main Street
City: San Juan
State: PR
ZIP: 00901
Country: Puerto Rico (or USA)

Card is added, but doesn’t show during payment

Open Google Wallet → select the card → set it as default for contactless payments. Restart your device after.
