Presets and repeating check-ins (Pro)

Kautio Pro presets, repeating check-ins (daily, weekly, monthly), editing a series, pause, resume, end, when Pro ends.

Written by Support Team

Presets and repeating check-ins are Kautio Pro conveniences. A preset saves a check-in setup so you can reuse it. A repeating check-in creates the same check-in on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. Neither changes how a check-in runs, and anyone on any plan can schedule the same check-in by hand. On other plans, tapping these features opens the Unlock with Pro screen. For plans and prices, see Plans, credits, and prices.

What a preset saves

A Kautio preset saves the reusable half of a check-in:

  • the tiers and their contacts;

  • Send first check-in after;

  • Grace window;

  • Wait between tiers;

  • Follow-up and its 24 or 48 hours;

  • Share my location;

  • Also call me;

  • an optional Default check-in title.

A preset never saves an activity start, a location, details, or photos.

In the app, presets are under Settings › Check-ins › Safety presets.

Creating a preset

You can create a Kautio preset from the check-in form or from Settings. A preset needs a Wait between tiers and, like a check-in, at least one contact in every tier.

From the check-in form:

  1. On New check-in, choose your tiers and a Wait between tiers.

  2. Tap ⋮, then Save as preset.

  3. Enter a name (up to 40 characters) and tap Save.

From Settings:

  1. Go to Settings › Check-ins › Safety presets.

  2. Tap New preset.

  3. Fill in Preset name (up to 40 characters), the optional Default check-in title, and the settings.

  4. Tap Save.

What a preset's tiers hold

A Kautio preset holds its own list of contacts for each tier, copied when you save the preset. If you filled a tier from a Contact Group, the preset keeps the people in it, not the group, so editing or deleting the group later doesn't change the preset. Because a preset can carry a Contact Group's contacts this way, presets are a Kautio Pro feature for the same reason Contact Groups are.

Starting a check-in from a preset

You can start a Kautio check-in from a preset on the Check-ins tab or on an open form.

  • From the Check-ins tab: tap the bookmark button at the top (Start from a preset) and choose a preset. New check-in opens with the banner "Started from preset "[name]". Add a start time and location, then schedule."

  • From an open form: on New check-in, tap the bookmark button (Apply a preset) and choose a preset. The preset replaces the tiers and settings and keeps the start time, location, details, and photos you've entered. The preset's default title fills the title only if the title is empty.

Either way, contacts who are no longer in your contact list are left out, with the notice "Former contacts were removed from tiers." Every tier of the preset is kept, in order. A tier left with no contacts stays on the form, marked "No one here — add someone or remove this tier before scheduling.", and the notice "Some tiers need correction. Tiers must have at least one recipient." appears; Schedule check-in works once every tier has a contact or the empty tier is removed. A check-in started from a preset counts toward your upcoming and per-day limits like any other check-in (see Scheduling a check-in › Scheduling limits and credits).

Editing or deleting a preset

To edit a Kautio preset, go to Settings › Check-ins › Safety presets and tap the preset, or tap ⋮ and then Edit.

When the preset opens, contacts who are no longer in your contact list are removed from its tiers, with the notice "Former contacts were removed from tiers." A tier left with no contacts stays, marked "No one here — add someone or remove this tier before scheduling.", under the notice "Some tiers need correction. Tiers must have at least one recipient." Save works once every tier has a contact or the empty tier is removed; until then it shows "Tiers must have at least one recipient."

To delete a preset, tap ⋮ and then Delete. The dialog says: "This only removes the saved preset. Check-ins you already scheduled keep their settings."

Making a check-in repeat

A Kautio Pro repeating check-in (a series) creates the same check-in on a schedule.

  1. On New check-in, fill in the form as usual, then tap Repeat.

  2. Choose Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Custom (see the table below).

  3. Under Ends, choose Never, On date, or After N (a number of times).

  4. Tap Done.

  5. Tap Schedule check-in.

Repeat option

How it repeats

Daily

Every day.

Weekly

On the days you pick under On days. If you pick none, the start date's weekday is used.

Monthly

On the same day of the month as the start date.

Custom

Every N days or weeks. With weeks, you can also pick days under On days.

A message reads "Recurring check-in created — N scheduled.", and the app opens Recurring check-ins. If any of the check-in's contacts are no longer in your contact list, they are left out and the message ends "Former contacts were removed from tiers."

Kautio creates the check-ins in a series up to 14 days ahead and keeps adding new ones as time passes. Each one is an ordinary check-in, with the same grace window, tiers, and follow-up. On Check-in details it shows a repeat icon and a Repeats row with the schedule, for example "Weekly on Fri".

Limit

Value

Active series

Up to 10. At the limit: "You can have up to 10 active recurring check-ins. End one first."

Every (Custom)

Up to 52 days or weeks

After N times

Up to 365

Check-ins from a series don't count toward the upcoming or per-day limits

Repeating check-ins, time zones, and clock changes

A Kautio repeating check-in keeps the time zone of the phone that created it, so a check-in set for a given local time stays at that local time all year, across clock changes.

  • When clocks spring forward and a time doesn't exist that day, the check-in moves later by the skipped amount.

  • When clocks fall back and a time happens twice, the earlier of the two is used.

  • A monthly check-in on the 29th, 30th, or 31st falls on the last day of shorter months.

Repeating check-ins and contacts who leave your list

When a contact is no longer in your Kautio contact list, they are left out of the future check-ins in your repeating series. You get a "Recurring check-in contacts changed" notification once for each change. It says how many contacts could no longer be included, and tells you plainly if no one is left to notify.

If every contact in a tier has been left out, that tier notifies no one. Its grace window still opens, and you can still Snooze or Dismiss, but nobody is notified when it ends, and the next tier follows as usual. During that window, the check-in screen shows "Nobody is notified at this tier." The "Check-in time" notification doesn't name a tier, and a Kautio call doesn't say when contacts are notified. When the first tier is the empty one, the "[title] is starting" notification says only when Kautio checks in on you. As with any Active check-in, the app offers Dismiss, not Cancel check-in: dismissing shows Cancelled while no contact has been notified, and Dismissed after. If that was the check-in's only tier, the check-in moves to Follow-up pending or Complete when the window ends, like any check-in with no tiers left. To change who a repeating series notifies, end the series and make a new repeating check-in with your current contacts (see Presets and repeating check-ins (Pro) › Changing one check-in or the whole series).

Changing one check-in or the whole series

A check-in from a Kautio repeating series can be edited or cancelled on its own, or cancelled together with the rest of the series.

  • Edit one check-in: Edit check-in on a check-in from a series changes only that check-in (see Changing or cancelling a check-in › Editing one check-in from a repeating series).

  • Change the whole series: the app has no control to change a series' time, days, or contacts. To change them, cancel with This and all future check-ins, then make a new repeating check-in.

  • Cancel: Cancel check-in on a Scheduled check-in from a series opens the Cancel recurring check-in dialog, with the three choices below.

Choice

What it does

Without Pro

Only this check-in

Cancels this check-in. It isn't created again.

Works

This and all future check-ins

Stops the series from this check-in onward and removes its upcoming check-ins. Check-ins you edited individually stay scheduled; cancel them one by one. Doesn't work on a paused series.

Doesn't work

All check-ins in this series

Ends the series, the same as End (see Presets and repeating check-ins (Pro) › Pausing, resuming, and ending a series).

Works

Pausing, resuming, and ending a series

You manage Kautio repeating series on the Recurring check-ins screen: Settings › Check-ins › Recurring check-ins, or the repeat icon (Recurring check-ins) at the top of the Check-ins tab. Each series' menu offers Pause (on an Active series), Resume (on a Paused series), and End.

A series shows one of these statuses, which are separate from each check-in's state:

Status

Meaning

Active

New check-ins are being created.

Paused

You paused it. No new check-ins are created.

Paused — renew Pro to resume

Kautio Pro ended. After you renew, the series resumes on its own within about 30 minutes. See Presets and repeating check-ins (Pro) › What happens if Pro ends?

Ended

The series is over.

  • Pausing or ending a series removes all of its check-ins that haven't started yet, including ones already scheduled. Check-ins from the series that you edited individually show as Cancelled.

  • End asks first. The End "[title]"? dialog says: "This cancels the upcoming check-ins in this series. A check-in that's already active keeps running." Tap End to confirm, or Cancel.

  • Pause acts at once and shows "Paused. Upcoming check-ins in this series are cancelled."

  • A check-in from the series that is already Active keeps running.

  • Resuming needs Kautio Pro and room under the 10-series limit. It creates the upcoming check-ins again. Check-ins that show Cancelled aren't created again.

Ending a series without Pro

Without Kautio Pro, the Recurring check-ins screen isn't available: the Settings row and the repeat icon on the Check-ins tab open Unlock with Pro. To end a repeating series without Pro:

  1. Open one of the series' Scheduled check-ins.

  2. Tap Cancel check-in.

  3. Tap All check-ins in this series.

Only this check-in also works without Pro. This and all future check-ins doesn't.

What happens if Pro ends?

When Kautio Pro ends, your presets and repeating check-ins stay, but they work differently.

  • Repeating series: each active series is paused, and you get a "Recurring check-ins paused" notification. Check-ins the series already created (up to 14 days ahead) still run. If you renew Kautio Pro within 30 days, the series resumes automatically. Otherwise it ends, and you get a "Recurring check-ins ended" notification. To end it sooner, see Presets and repeating check-ins (Pro) › Ending a series without Pro.

  • Presets: kept, so they're ready if you subscribe to Kautio Pro again. While Pro is inactive, you can't start or fill a new check-in from a preset: Safety presets in Settings and Start from a preset on the Check-ins tab open Unlock with Pro, and the check-in form doesn't offer Apply a preset. If the Safety presets screen opens another way, for example from a notification, it lists your presets with a lock icon under the note "Kautio Pro is needed to use presets. Your saved presets are kept." and a See Kautio Pro link. It has no New preset button, a preset's menu offers only Delete, and tapping a preset opens Unlock with Pro. Check-ins you already scheduled from a preset keep their settings and run as usual. When you subscribe to Kautio Pro again, your presets work as before.

  • Contact groups: kept the same way. They stay listed on the Contacts tab with the note "Kautio Pro is needed to use contact groups. Your saved groups are kept." You can't create or edit a group, and Add from contact group in a new check-in's tiers shows locked. You add contacts to a tier one by one, exactly as before. See Managing your contacts › What happens to my Contact Groups if Pro ends?

  • Several check-ins at once: the one-at-a-time rule applies again (see More than one check-in › One check-in at a time (Free and Full Access)).
