Kautio texts you about a member only because that member entered your phone number: either to invite you to be their contact, or because you already accepted and one of their check-ins has reached you. A check-in is a timer the member sets before an activity; if they don't respond to it, Kautio notifies the contacts they chose, in the order they chose. Kautio sends no marketing texts. Kautio is not an emergency service, and it contacts no one but the people a member chose. If you don't have a Kautio account and need help, write to hello@kautio.app.
Why did I get a text from Kautio, and what does it mean?
Kautio sends four kinds of text. Each starts with "Kautio:" and names the member.
Text | When Kautio sends it | What it means | What you can do |
Invitation: "Kautio: [name] wants to add you as a safety contact. Tap to respond: [link] Reply STOP to opt out" | Once, when a member invites your number. | The member would like you as a contact. Nothing further is sent unless you accept. | Accept, decline, or block in the app, or ignore it. See Got a text from Kautio? › Accepting, declining, or blocking an invitation. |
Check-in text: "Kautio: [name] didn't check in for "[title]". They added you as a contact. Details: [link]" | When the member didn't respond to a check-in and it reached your tier. | A timer the member set wasn't stopped. | Open the details and decide what to do. See Got a text from Kautio? › What does it mean when someone didn't check in? |
Follow-up: "Kautio: [name] didn't send their follow-up for "[title]". Please reach out to them." | When the member turned on follow-up for a check-in and didn't clear it by the time they set. | The member hasn't cleared their follow-up. | Reach out to the member yourself. This text has no link. |
"All good": "Kautio: [name] has checked in for "[title]" and wanted you to know they are all good." | Only when the member chooses to send it after a check-in that reached at least one contact. | The member chose to tell you they're all good. | Nothing. |
If the member has two check-ins running at the same moment, the check-in text adds how long ago this one started, for example "(started 45 minutes ago)", after the title.
Why does a Kautio text show a phone number instead of a name?
A Kautio text names the member by the display name on their account. If the member's account has no name, check-in, follow-up, and "all good" texts, and the check-in app notification, show the member's phone number instead, written like "+1 (404) 555-0101". It is the number on the member's Kautio account. If no number is on file either, the text says "Someone". An invitation text never shows a number: if the inviter has no name, it says "Someone".
Why did I get a follow-up text without an earlier check-in text?
A follow-up text goes to every contact the member listed in any tier of that check-in, including tiers that were never reached. This is by design: the follow-up is the member's last backstop, so it reaches everyone they listed. So you can receive a follow-up text even though no check-in text reached you first, and even though you can't open that check-in's details in the app. The follow-up text means only that the member didn't clear their follow-up by the time they set (24 or 48 hours after the start time they chose for the check-in). It says nothing about the member. Reach out to them yourself if you want to.
Who gets an "all good" text?
An "all good" text goes to every contact a check-in already tried to notify, and only when at least one of those contacts was reached.
The member can send it after they Dismiss the check-in, or after all of the check-in's tiers have been notified.
Sending it is the member's choice. Kautio never sends it on its own.
It's a text only, with no app notification.
If you blocked the member, you don't receive it.
If you or the member removed the other as a contact after the check-in notified you, you still receive it.
A sign-in code text you didn't request
A text with a 6-digit verification code arrives when someone enters your number to sign in to Kautio or create a Kautio account. If you didn't request it, don't share the code with anyone; you can ignore the text.
Accepting, declining, or blocking an invitation
You answer a Kautio invitation in the Kautio app.
Tap the link in the invitation text.
If you don't have Kautio, install it and create an account with the phone number the invitation was sent to. Then tap the link again.
The Contact invite screen shows "[name] wants to add you as a contact."
Tap Accept or Decline. Report and Block are below them.
You can also answer from the app without the link:
Open the Contacts tab.
Tap the envelope icon (Pending invites), then Received.
Tap Accept, or open the menu next to the invitation for Decline or Block.
Can I accept by texting back?
No. Replying to a Kautio invitation text, with YES or anything else, doesn't accept it; invitations are answered only in the Kautio app. Replying STOP is different: it stops every Kautio text to your number. See Got a text from Kautio? › Stopping or restarting texts (STOP, START, HELP).
What accepting an invitation means
Accepting a Kautio invitation makes you and the member mutual contacts.
Each of you sees the other's name and phone number in the Contacts tab.
Either of you can add the other to check-ins.
Being a contact is free and uses no credits.
You get texts from that member's check-ins only when a check-in reaches your tier, or for their follow-up or "all good" texts.
You don't need to keep the app open or stay online.
What declining an invitation means
Declining a Kautio invitation ends it quietly.
Kautio doesn't notify the person who invited you. The invitation disappears from their list.
That person can't send you another invitation.
You can still invite them yourself later.
What blocking someone means
Blocking the sender of a Kautio invitation stops them inviting you again. Tapping Block opens the Block contact dialog: "This will remove the invite and prevent this person from sending you invites in the future." Tap Block to confirm.
Any other pending invitations from that person to you are cancelled.
You won't receive "all good" texts from that person.
If they try to invite you again, Kautio doesn't tell them that you blocked them.
There is no unblock option in the app. To lift a block, contact support@kautio.app.
Why won't the invitation open?
When a Kautio invitation can't be answered, the Contact invite screen shows a message, either in place of the inviter's name or after you tap Accept, Decline, or Block. If something else goes wrong, such as a dropped connection, it shows "Couldn't accept the invite. Try again.", "Couldn't decline the invite. Try again.", or "Couldn't block this contact. Try again."
Message | What it means | What to do |
"Couldn't load this invite." | Usually, the account you're signed in to uses a different number from the one the invitation was sent to, so the invitation can't be opened. It can also mean a connection problem. | Sign in with the number the text went to, or try again. |
"This invite has expired." | The invitation is more than 7 days old. | Ask the person to send a new one. |
"This invite has already been responded to." | The invitation was already accepted, declined, or blocked, the person who sent it revoked it, or it expired and was cleared by Kautio's daily check. | If you still want to connect, ask for a new invitation, or invite them yourself. |
"This invite is no longer available." | The invitation no longer exists. | Ask for a new invitation, or invite them yourself. |
What does it mean when someone didn't check in?
A Kautio check-in text means a member set a timer, didn't respond to it, and the check-in reached your tier. A notification means a timer wasn't stopped, nothing more; it says nothing about the person or why they didn't respond.
You decide what to do. You can open the details in the app and try to reach the member yourself.
Kautio contacted no one else beyond the member's own chosen contacts. Kautio never contacts 911 or any emergency service.
If you decide someone needs urgent help, call 911 (or your local emergency number) yourself.
Other contacts may be notified later. If the member set up more tiers, Kautio keeps notifying the next tier, in order, until the member responds or no tiers remain.
If you're a contact on two of their check-ins at once
When a member has two check-ins running at the same moment, Kautio's check-in text includes how long ago this check-in started, for example "(started 45 minutes ago)", after the title. Use it, and the link, to tell the two check-ins apart.
Can I stop or snooze someone else's check-in?
No. Only the member who scheduled a check-in can Snooze or Dismiss it. As a contact, you can view the check-in's details and add notes while it's Active.
Seeing the check-in's details
A check-in's details open in the Kautio app, on the Check-in details screen. You can see a check-in only after your tier has been notified.
To open the details:
Tap the link in the check-in text, on the phone where you use Kautio. If you don't have Kautio yet, install it, sign in with the number the text went to, and tap the link again.
Or, in the app, open the Responding tab. Check-ins that haven't ended, including those in Follow-up pending, are under Live Alerts; ended ones are under Past Alerts. When none is live, the tab shows "All quiet." If no check-in has ever reached you, it shows "No check-ins from your contacts yet".
The Check-in details screen shows:
the title and description;
the location the member entered (tap it to open it in your maps app);
the photos the member attached;
Activity: when the check-in started, each "Tier N notified · N people" row, "Follow-up sent", and how the check-in ended. It shows counts, never names, and never shows the member's snoozes;
"Escalates every [interval]" (the member's wait between tiers plus their grace window), while the check-in is still notifying tiers;
Location trail, only if the member turned on location sharing for that check-in: a map of the check-in's breadcrumbs, with the location the member entered as its own pin, and Tap for details under it (see Got a text from Kautio? › Viewing a check-in's location trail);
Notes from the member and other contacts. Notes show their author as "Responder" or "Check-in owner".
A web address in the description or a note can be tapped. Kautio first asks Leave Kautio? and shows the address; it opens only if you tap Continue.
Adding a note. While the check-in is Active, you can add a note of up to 1,000 characters with up to 3 photos, each under 25 MB. Notes are visible to everyone on the check-in.
Status labels. The label at the top of the screen describes where the check-in's schedule stands:
Label | What it means |
Active (with "NEEDS CHECK-IN") | The check-in is running and the member hasn't responded. Later tiers may still be notified. |
Resolved | The member dismissed the check-in. Shown briefly until its final state is recorded. |
No response | Every tier has been notified and the member didn't respond. Shown briefly until its final state is recorded. |
Follow-up pending | Every tier has been notified, and the member's follow-up hasn't been cleared yet. |
Complete | The check-in has finished. |
Dismissed | The member dismissed the check-in after at least one contact was notified. |
Cancelled | The check-in ended before any contact was reached. |
Viewing a check-in's location trail
The Location trail map on Check-in details appears only when the member turned on location sharing for that check-in. It shows the check-in's breadcrumbs: the points the member's phone recorded, about every 30 seconds while the check-in was Active, joined by a line.
A marker titled "Latest breadcrumb" sits on the newest breadcrumb. It is the last point recorded, not a live position; no breadcrumbs are added after the check-in leaves Active.
If the member entered a location for the check-in, it appears as its own pin, titled "Activity location", in a different color from the line.
With no breadcrumb yet, the map shows only the "Activity location" pin. With neither, it shows "No location data".
Tap for details under the map opens the Location trail screen. From top to bottom:
Part | What it shows |
Map | The breadcrumbs, the "Activity location" pin, and a marker on the selected breadcrumb. |
Bar under the map | The selection, for example "#12 · 9:41 PM", with Open in Maps and Copy. |
Activity location | The location's name, and its address when it differs from the name. Shown only if the check-in has one; it doesn't scroll. |
Breadcrumbs | Every breadcrumb, newest first, as its number and time, for example "#12 9:41 PM". #1 is the check-in's first breadcrumb, and a breadcrumb keeps its number. A breadcrumb from another day also shows its date, for example "Oct 14, 9:41 PM". With none yet, the list reads "No breadcrumbs yet." |
The screen opens with the latest breadcrumb selected, or the activity location when there is no breadcrumb. Tap the activity location or a breadcrumb to select it; the map moves to it.
New breadcrumbs appear at the top of the list; they don't change the selection or move the map.
Open in Maps opens the selection in the phone's built-in maps app on iPhone, or in the default maps app on Android. A breadcrumb is labeled "Breadcrumb #12" there.
Copy copies the selection as plain text and shows "Location copied.". A breadcrumb copies as "#12 at 9:41 PM: 34.03311, -118.22966"; the activity location copies as its name, its address (when it differs from the name), and its coordinates, one per line. Android 13 and later also show the phone's own clipboard message.
The map and the list hold the latest 1,000 breadcrumbs, about 8 hours; older ones aren't shown, and the numbers still count from the check-in's first. On a longer trail, the screen needs a connection to number the breadcrumbs; until it has one, it shows "No location data".
Times are in your phone's time zone, to the minute. Two breadcrumbs in the same minute are told apart by their numbers.
Stopping or restarting texts (STOP, START, HELP)
Replying to a Kautio text with a keyword controls every Kautio text to your number.
Reply | Also works | What it does |
STOP | CANCEL, END, QUIT, UNSUBSCRIBE, STOPALL | Blocks every Kautio text to your number: check-in texts, follow-ups, "all good" texts, and invitations. Our messaging provider applies the block, and Kautio can't lift it for you. |
START | UNSTOP, YES | Lifts the block. It doesn't sign you up for anything. |
HELP | Sends a reply with Kautio's support contact details. |
The full SMS terms are at kautio.app/sms-terms.
Do I still get app notifications after replying STOP?
Replying STOP blocks Kautio texts only, not Kautio app notifications.
Check-in notifications: yes, if you have Kautio installed with notifications on.
Follow-up and "all good": no. Those are texts only.
The member gets a "Contacts not reached" notification only if no one in that tier was reached by text or app notification. Kautio doesn't tell them why.
If someone is counting on you as a contact, tell them you've replied STOP.
Becoming someone's contact again after STOP
After replying STOP, you can't receive a new Kautio invitation until you lift the block. Reply START to a Kautio text, then ask the person to send a new invitation. Until you reply START, they see "This phone number has opted out of Kautio messages and can't receive invites." when they try.
Does Kautio charge for these texts?
Kautio doesn't charge you for its texts, and being a contact is free. Your mobile carrier's message and data rates may apply.
How do I stop being someone's contact?
Stopping being a Kautio member's contact takes one of these steps:
Remove one person, keep the rest. Open Contacts, tap the menu next to their name, then Remove contact and Remove. Removal is mutual and silent, and it applies to their check-ins already scheduled too: you get no further check-in texts, notifications, or follow-up texts from their check-ins. The one exception is an "all good" text for a check-in that had already notified you. See Managing your contacts › How do I remove a contact?
Stop all Kautio texts. Reply STOP to any Kautio text. This applies to every member who has you as a contact. See Got a text from Kautio? › Stopping or restarting texts (STOP, START, HELP).
Delete your account. Deleting your Kautio account ends every contact relationship. See Your account.
No account? If you never accepted, Kautio sends you nothing beyond the one invitation text. You can reply STOP, or write to hello@kautio.app.
Reporting an invitation or check-in you didn't expect
You can report a Kautio invitation, a contact, or a check-in to our team from the app.
Open Report from where you saw the invitation, contact, or check-in (see the table below).
Choose a reason: Unwanted contact, Harassment, Impersonation, Spam, or Something else.
Optionally, add details in Add details (optional).
Tap Send report. The app shows Report received, then tap Done.
To report | Where to tap |
An invitation | Report on the Contact invite screen |
A check-in | The menu (More options) on Check-in details, then Report this alert |
A contact | The menu next to them on the Contacts tab, then Report |
A person on our team reviews every report.
A report never changes who gets notified. Block this person (for an invitation) and Remove contact (for a contact) are separate steps, offered after you send the report.
You can report only someone connected to you: the sender of an invitation to you, one of your contacts, or a member whose check-in reached you.
You can send up to 10 reports in 24 hours.
If a report can't be accepted for either reason, the app shows "The report couldn't be sent. Contact support if this keeps happening." For a connection problem it shows "Couldn't send your report. Try again."
See Reporting misuse.
Getting help with a Kautio text
Help with a Kautio text depends on whether you have a Kautio account:
You have Kautio: open Settings, then the Help & support section, or email support@kautio.app.
You don't have Kautio: email hello@kautio.app.
Either way: reply HELP to any Kautio text for our support contact details.
