Benchmarking your ESG performance with KEY ESG

KEY ESG's benchmarking shows how your ESG and carbon performance compares to peers, and how your reporting has changed over time. Reports are prepared with your CSM, using KEY ESG's proprietary data and external references.

What a benchmarking report gives you

  • Peer context: where your emissions intensity sits within your industry, broken down by sub-sector, on a revenue-intensity basis.

  • Year-on-year view: how your absolute emissions and your intensities have moved across reporting years.

  • Reporting practice context: how peers in your sector are handling CSRD and ESRS disclosure, net-zero targets, SBTi validation, Scope 3 coverage, and the most common reporting gaps.

  • Wider market context: how your position sits against the broader private-equity-backed company population (Invest Europe) and the SFDR PAI disclosure landscape (ESMA).

  • Engagement priorities: a practical set of next steps for the coming reporting cycle.

Our method: Peer comparisons are presented on an intensity basis (per unit of revenue) so companies of different sizes can be compared fairly, and every benchmark figure carries the sample size it is drawn from. Your own year-on-year comparison uses absolute figures as well as intensities.

The two report types

Portfolio report, for private equity and infrastructure

Built for a fund or investor with multiple portfolio companies. It covers portfolio-level year-on-year performance, a per-company reporting maturity view, and deep-dives into selected portfolio companies.

Standalone-company report

Built for a single organisation, which may consolidate several operating entities or sites. It covers company-level performance and deep-dives into selected entities or sites.

Both variants use the same shared peer benchmark and the same external references, so the underlying data is consistent whichever report you receive.

The data behind the benchmarks

  • KEY ESG Emissions Universe: 10,829 companies · 7,197 disclose GHG data · 97 countries · 145 industry classifications

  • KEY ESG CSRD Reports Library: 1,677 reports across 1,055 companies · CSRD-compliant sustainability statements · FY2023–FY2025

  • Invest Europe 2026 ESG KPI Report: 8,756 portcos · 1,206 PE and VC firms · 4,039 funds

Every benchmark figure in a report is shown with its sample size, and peer comparisons are made within your sub-sector wherever the sample supports it.

Which sectors we can benchmark

Peer coverage varies by sector and sub-sector. Before a report is prepared, your Customer Success Manager will confirm the size of the peer sample available for your sector. Where a sector sample is thin (fewer than 30 peers), that is flagged clearly and alternative reference points are offered, so a report is never built on a sample that cannot support the comparison.

How to request a report

Speak to your KEY ESG Customer Success Manager, or contact the support team at support@keyesg.com

To prepare a report, we will confirm four things with you:

  1. The report type (portfolio or standalone company)

  2. Your sector

  3. Which companies, entities or sites to deep-dive

  4. The narrative emphasis you want the report to carry
