What are targets and actions?

Targets and action plans let you set goals to achieve your ESG targets and create actionable steps to work towards those goals. As a fund manager, you can set targets and action plans both in your own self-assessment area, and view them at the portfolio company level.

Setting targets and actions for your self-assessment

  • Entity-level targets: scope a target to one or more specific entities, not just your whole self-assessment. When you filter Carbon Insights by entity, the target line updates automatically to match.

  • Multiple targets per metric/scope: hold more than one target for the same metric at the same time — for example, a regulatory mandate alongside an internal net-zero ambition.

  • Target status: each target has a status field you set yourself: Not started, On track, At risk, Achieved, or Missed.

Please note: target status is a manual, user-set field rather than one the platform calculates for you.

How to set targets in your self-assessment

  1. Navigate to Targets under 'Improve' on the left-hand menu of your self-assessment area.

  2. Select the metric you would like to set a target for.

  3. Choose the coverage for your target: your whole fund self-assessment, or one or more specific entities.

  4. Set up your target, filling out the base year, target year, calculation methodology, and target value.

  5. Save your target and check in regularly to update the status as things progress.

How to set action plans

  1. Navigate to Action Plans under 'Improve'.

  2. Select 'Add action'.

  3. Input your action plan name, description, category, start & end date, and person responsible, and set progress.

Viewing portfolio company targets and action plans

Fund managers can also view the targets and action plans that each of their portfolio companies has set, giving you visibility into ESG progress across your entire portfolio without needing to chase companies individually.

  1. Navigate to the fund manager platform.

  2. Go to the Reports tab.

  3. Click on the 'Targets and action plans' tab, where you can filter by company to see all entity-level targets and action plans set by your portfolio companies.

This gives you a single view across the fund to see which companies are on track, at risk, or have achieved their commitments — useful both for portfolio monitoring and for LP/investor reporting.
