Calculate waste allowance and include it in the calculation

Calculate total material consumption for the entire production process

Written by Patric

You can set the waste allowance individually for each production resource:

In the administration area under Production resources > Capabilities & formulas.

For each production resource, you can enter a percentage and an additional fixed amount.

The basis is always the product being processed.

For example:

  • In offset printing, waste refers to the number of press sheets.

  • In perfect binding, waste refers to the finished copies.

  • For packing, it refers to the complete SKU (packaging unit).

Important:

You can also define the waste allowance formula for each production task individually.

In the administration area, go to Production tasks, open the relevant task and enter the waste allowance formula at the bottom of “General”, for example:

Total processed goods * Waste rate + Absolute waste

You can also use any other variables, for example:

  • Number of sheets

  • Print run

  • Total quantity of incoming goods

  • Number of folded sheets

⚠️ Make sure the production flow is configured correctly!

Only then can Keyline calculate the waste allowance correctly and recursively – working backwards from the finished product to adjust all required quantities for the preceding production steps automatically.

The calculated waste allowance is shown for each production task in the production flow:

(at the small 🗑 icon below the total running time).

This gives you full control over the planned additional quantities and helps you identify and avoid bottlenecks or planning errors early.

Depending on the item produced, waste then refers to:

  • the press sheet

  • a partial product

  • the complete product

  • or even packages containing several copies

You can see all of this at a glance in the production flow in Keyline.

Of course, you can also make manual adjustments whenever a correction or change is needed.

This keeps your production planning flexible and aligned precisely with actual demand.
