Product costing – description

Set up components, colors and finishings

Written by Patric

The first step in costing is the product description. Here you start by simply describing the product.

You can configure the following settings for the overall product:

  • Finishing for the overall component: Your order may contain several components, such as an inner section and cover. Typical examples of finishing for an overall component are perfect binding or saddle stitching.

  • Product information for production: Anyone can read this information during any production task on the web or iPad.

  • Artwork: If you have a URL for artwork at the overall product level, you can store it here (for example, a file on Dropbox), with an optional file type and file status.

You can define the following parameters for each component:

  • Layout (page count, page arrangement, format. For example, when producing pads in offset printing, the option “All pages have the same print image” is important for calculating the correct number of plates if you produce notepads with 100 pages (50 sheets), and the content of the pages is identical.)

  • Paper properties requested by the customer (you can preselect these if the customer prefers a particular property but otherwise has no specific requirements. If the customer requests a particular material, select it directly on the printing press under “Production”.)

  • Colors (select all colors individually, or enter CMYK or Euroscale to select all four process colors at once. If you tick “Different colors for front and back sides”, you can use different colors — or no color — for the reverse side.)

  • Finishing (add finishing for this individual component here, such as lamination for covers.)

  • Artwork (if you have an artwork URL for this individual component, store it here with the familiar optional file type and file status.)
