If you're selling to customers in Canada, you'll need to collect and apply the correct tax numbers to ensure your tax calculations are accurate. This may include:
GST/HST: For sales anywhere in Canada.
QST: Specifically for sales in Quebec.
This guide walks you through how to add either a GST/HST or QST number to a customer profile in Stripe.
Step-by-Step: Add GST/HST or QST in Stripe
1. Go to the Customers tab
Log in to your Stripe account and navigate to the Customers tab in the sidebar.
2. Select the customer
Click on the customer you'd like to update with a tax number.
3. Access Details section to Edit
Once you're on the customer’s profile, go to the Details section and click the Edit icon.
4. Scroll to the Tax ID section
A pop-up window will appear. Scroll down until you see the Tax ID section.
5. Choose the correct tax type
Click the dropdown and select the appropriate Canadian tax ID type:
Select Canada GST/HST if you're adding a GST or HST number.
Select Canada QST if you're adding a Quebec Sales Tax number.
6. Enter the tax number
Type the customer's tax number in the field provided.
7. Save your changes
To save, click the “Update Customer” button..
That’s it!
Your customer's tax number is now stored in Stripe, allowing the platform to properly apply and calculate taxes on your Canadian sales.
