Chargebee + Kintsugi: Setting Up Canada and Collecting Tax Registration Numbers (GST/HST & QST)

If you’re selling to customers in Canada using Chargebee, it’s important to properly configure your account so you can collect their tax registration numbers—such as GST, HST, and QST IDs—during billing. This guide will walk you through setting up Canada as a tax region in Chargebee and enabling the collection of tax IDs from your Canadian customers.


How to Configure Canada as a Tax Region

1. Navigate to Settings in your Chargebee dashboard.

Go to Configure Chargebee > Taxes.

2.Select the "Taxes" option.

3. Click to “Add a New Region

4. Type “Canada” and select it from the dropdown menu.

5. Choose “Kintsugi” as the Tax Provider

6.After selecting Kintsugi, click “Add Tax reg. no” which is found in the “Add GST tax registration number” section in the right sidebar.

7. Enter your store’s GST/HST registration number.

8. Locate the "Collect tax registration number from customers" option on the right sidebar and activate it by clicking the toggle on. Enabling this ensures that your customers can input their own GST, HST, and QST IDs during the checkout or billing process.


Collect Tax IDs from Customers

After completing the Canada setup, verify that the Billing form for customers now displays the changes. This ensures that Chargebee can collect Tax IDs from customers.

1. In the "Customers" tab, use the search bar to find customers in Canada by typing "Canada."

2. Select any customer from the list.

3. Click “Update Billing Info

4. You should now see a field labeled “Tax Registration Number
Customer will be able to enter their tax IDs—such as GST, HST, and QST—depending on their province and tax obligations.
