If you need to collect tax ID numbers from your customers in Shopify (for example, for B2B sales or tax-exempt verification), you can use the Helium Customer Fields app to easily set this up.
This guide walks you through how to:
Add a Tax ID field to your customer form
Allow customers to submit their tax ID
View the submitted tax ID in your Shopify admin
✅ What You’ll Need
Your Shopify store Admin Access
The Helium Customer Fields app installed
→ Install it from the Shopify App Store if you haven’t already
🔧 Step 1: Add a Custom “Tax ID” Field
In your Shopify Admin, go to Apps > Helium Customer Fields.
Click Data Columns in the sidebar.
Click Add data column.
Fill in the details:
Label: Tax ID
Namespace: customer_fields
Key: tax_id
Data type: Text
(Optional) Toggle on Add to favorites so it’s easier to find later.
Click Save.
This creates a custom field where customer tax ID info will be stored.
📝 Step 2: Add the Field to a Customer Form
Now you’ll make sure customers can enter their tax ID during sign-up or in their account.
In the Helium app, go to Forms.
Click Get Started to create a new form.
Choose Legacy Customer Form.
Name your form something like “Customer Details Form”.
Under Template, select B2B / Wholesale.
Click Continue.
➕ Step 3: Add the Tax ID Input to the Form
In the Taxes and Terms section of the form builder, click to add a new field.
Use the same info you entered earlier:
Label: Tax ID
Namespace: customer_fields
Key: tax_id
Click Continue to move to the next step.
🎨 Step 4: Install the Form on Your Theme
Select the Shopify theme where you'd like the form to appear.
Click Install.
Click Done.
Once the form is live, customers will be able to enter their tax ID when registering or updating their account.
👀 Step 5: View Collected Tax IDs
To view a customer’s tax ID:
In Shopify Admin, go to Apps > Helium Customer Fields.
Open the Customers tab.
Select a customer.
You’ll now see the Tax ID field with their submitted value.
✅ That’s it!
You’ve now set up a way to collect and view tax IDs from your customers directly in Shopify using Helium. This is especially useful for handling tax-exempt customers or wholesale B2B buyers.
