How is KinKeeper different from Kith + Kin?

Learn what has changed in KinKeeper vs. our previous app, Kith + Kin.

Updated over a week ago

On March 5, 2024, we're launching our brand new native mobile app, KinKeeper, to replace our original web app, Kith + Kin. Below are some of the key differences and what you might expect as you transition to the new app.

πŸ“² KinKeeper is a native mobile app

Accounts created in Kith + Kin will just log in with their existing credentials in KinKeeper. The new app is found in either the Apple App Store or Google Play store and new accounts must be created from these apps on a mobile device.

Previously, Kith + Kin was what's called a "progressive web app" and is therefore accessed via your browser on any type of device. While that sounds convenient (and definitely had it's benefits!), we realized a native app gave us an opportunity to utilize important features like:

  • Push Notifications, which enhance the collaborative nature of our app for reminders and appointments

  • Offline Access, which means you can still access your text-based data in low-service areas like hospitals

  • Simpler Download, since most users are familiar with app stores, this was the natural first step for many!

However, this means that for now, desktop access is limited to just Custom Access Links.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Sharing is simpler and includes a new Custom Access option

In Kith + Kin, sharing information was extremely versatile, yet it was difficult to manage what was shared with who. We listened to user feedback and behavior to make this much simpler and give a new, much asked for, way of sharing. In KinKeeper, you can share in two ways:

1. Full Profile in-app sharing

This is the simplest option and likely the most popular way people wanted to share. Give someone else full access to everything in a profile with either Editor, Contributor, or Viewer privileges. Perfect for parents caring for kids, siblings caring for an aging parent, partners sharing with one-another, pets, etc.

2. Custom Access Links for non-registered users

When someone needs temporary access (like a babysitter or new specialist) or specific access (only info pertaining to a topic, or simply a list of meds), you can share a Custom Access Link with anyone via SMS or email. The recipient can view this information without creating an account.

πŸ““ Notebooks and Topics are condensed into one

One of the biggest hurdles we noticed user have in Kith + Kin was the requirement to place all information in a Notebook. This was pertinent for the permissions structure of Kith + Kin, but we decided to take a different approach in KinKeeper to make this much easier for you!

All notebooks and topics in Kith + Kin are now just Topics in KinKeeper.

Think of Topics like tags or categories. Putting information in Topics is now optional and you can add multiple Topics to any piece of information. This makes for a simpler and more flexible way to organize your information!

πŸ“„ Photos and Documents are now combined in Files

Again, we listed to feedback to get a better grasp of how people wanted to add attachments like photos and documents to their profiles. There's two simple ways to add attachments in KinKeeper:

1. Add an attachment to anything

Every type of info you add (notes, meds, practitioners, etc.) now has an attachment area, so you can add any file type directly to an item.

2. Add a "File" when you just need to store one or more photos/docs

Sometimes you have papers you know you need, but you don't know what to do with them just yet. Or want to quickly snap a few photos of and organize later. Now you can add a File and attach any combination of photos and documents to the same item!

πŸŽ‰ And so much more!

  • Enhanced guidance to help new and existing users get the most of of KinKeeper

  • New Upcoming area for to-do items

  • More log in options with Apple and Google

  • Improved info type details and additional fields

  • Improved accessibility

  • Easier navigation with profiles

  • Faster performance overall
