How To Use the Emergency Access QR Code
Updated over a week ago

KinKeeper’s Emergency Access feature is designed to provide direct access to critical information to first responders (paramedics, EMT’s, etc.) or other individuals who may need information about you during an emergency. Think of it like the digital version of a medical alert bracelet.

This information is accessible via a QR code that you can print out directly from your app, save to your camera reel and/or share with another individual. Once you enable your code, anyone who has a mobile phone with a camera can scan it to view the emergency info you’ve made available – they do not need the Kinkeeper app.

In order to enable your emergency access code*, tap on the three dots in the upper righthand corner of a person’s profile, select “emergency access” and then simply tap “turn on.” In order to view your card, tap “view card” and then choose whether you want to print it or share it virtually.

The following information is automatically included in your link:

  • Allergies

  • Conditions

  • Medications

  • Practitioners

  • Emergency Contacts

  • Any additional information you’ve add to a default “Emergency Access” topic that exists in every profile for ease of use and standardization

To include additional information, simply find the item (perhaps a note, file, ID card, etc.) that you want to include, go to the topic tab on that item and check “emergency access”. Items that may be critical in case of an emergency could be those similar to the following:

  • Medical directive or DNR (do not resuscitate)

  • Conditions that could impact the treatment approach like bleeding disorders, cardiovascular/renal/respiratory disorders, several mental illness, seizure disorders or pregnancy

According to a recent New York Times article entitled Paramedics Share One Tip that Can Save Your Life, first responders recommend documenting your medications, allergies and critical conditions. They suggest placing the information on your refrigerator and keeping a copy in your purse or wallet as those are the places they will look in case of emergency, particularly if the patient is non-responsive.

* Please note that only the owner of a profile can access the emergency access card (due to the sensitive nature of the information that can be provided through the QR code) and this feature is currently only available on the mobile app and not the web app / desktop version at this time.
