In the last curriculum update, the IB introduced six main concepts for Business management: change, culture, ethics, globalisation, innovation and strategy.

At Kognity, we support teaching these concepts in four ways.

1. Introduction to the concepts 📖

What is this?

In section 0.0.1 Concepts, we define all of the concepts and provide an example to illustrate them. We then provide a list of subtopics where we connect the concept to the business management material (see below) and then suggest where they are interconnected with other subjects. It ends with an action plan for students.

How can I use it?

  • Create a book assignment for this section

  • Create an action plan with your class

2. The big picture 🧠

What is this?

At the end of each ‘The big picture’ section, we have a concept box that connects the subtopic to one or two of the main concepts, and it includes one or two open ended questions.

For example, in subtopic 1.3 Organisational objectives, The big picture ends with this concept box:

How can I use it?

  • Start your lesson with a group discussion on these questions

  • Use these questions as essay prompts

  • When the subtopic is completed, revisit these questions to see if students change their answers.

3. Case studies 🗺

What is this?

At the end of many case studies, we have a concept box that connects the case to one or two of the main concepts, and it includes one or two open ended questions.

In section 0.1.2 collected case studies, you will find a list of all of the case studies in the book. The ones with an asterisk* include concept support.

For example, in 1.1.4 Entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, after a case study on entrepreneurship in Haiti, you will find this box:

How can I use it?

  • Create a book assignment before class, and then have a group discussion on the case study using these questions.

  • Use these questions as essay prompts

  • Use these questions as research prompts for inquiry-based learning.

4. Exam-style questions 📝

What is this?

Paper 2 Section C directly involves the concepts. We support these through example answers and commentary.

For example, one exam style questions begins like this:

How can I use it?

  • Create an assignment for the exam-style questions

  • Review these questions in the classroom

  • Have your students peer review their answers, specifically discussing the concepts.
