Creating custom dashboards

Written by Kevin Jabbour

Custom dashboards help you access the right data at a user or department level.

You can create dashboards using charts and data tables. Once set up, you can save them as favorites and schedule them to be sent via email.

Kohort uses Looker for visualisations, so you can customise charts the same way you would in Looker

Step 1 - Customise your first chart for the dashboard

Choose the chart or table you want to add to your dashboard, then click Explore.

Step 2 - Create a custom dashboard from the chart

In Explore mode, you can filter the chart to fit your needs.

When you're ready to save:

  1. Click Settings

  2. Select Save

  3. Choose As a new dashboard

Give your dashboard a name and choose where to save it:

  • My Folder – Visible only to you

  • Group – Visible to your company

After creating the dashboard, a confirmation message will appear.

  • Click View Dashboard to open it immediately

  • Or find it later under Personal in the left menu bar

Step 3 - Add additional charts to the existing dashboard

You can add more charts to your dashboard in different ways, including creating one from scratch. For now, let’s add an existing chart or table.

  1. Find the chart you want to add

  2. Follow the same steps as before to explore and customise it

  3. When saving:

    • Choose "To an existing dashboard"

    • Select your dashboard

    • Name the new chart and save

Step 4 - Customise your dashboard layout and apply global filters

After saving the new item, you'll be taken to the edit screen. If not, open your dashboard and:

  1. Click the kebab menu (three dots)

  2. Select Edit

You can adjust the layout by resizing or moving charts:

  • To resize – Click and hold the bottom right corner of a chart, then drag

  • To move – Click and hold the top left corner of a chart, then drag

If you have multiple charts with common filters, you can link them to a global filter. This lets you apply a single filter to all selected charts.

You can:

  • Add a new filter

  • Edit or delete existing filters

While editing, click "Tiles To Update" and choose how you want to apply the global filter

When you're done adding and customising your dashboard, click Save. It will then appear in the left sidebar.

To mark a dashboard as a favourite (so it appears at the top of your list), click the tag icon.
