Did you know that some functionalities in Kontentino are limited due to API restrictions on social media platforms? Read on to find out what these restrictions mean for you and your work.

But first, let’s look at a few definitions. ☕

What’s an API?

An API stands for Application Programming Interface and basically allows two computers or computer programs to communicate.

Thanks to APIs, third-party applications like Kontentino can provide certain functionalities (native to the social platforms) in the application to their users. There are several different types of APIs, and while some can be integrated freely, others have limitations for their use.

What are the different types of APIs?

There are several types of APIs — the three main ones are:

  • Open API

An open API is a public type that can share data openly. Any developer and application can access and use this API, making it easier to set up integrations between the platform and third parties.

  • Internal API

This type of API is not released to the public and can only be used by developers within a given company.

  • Partner API

Partner APIs can be used externally only with applications and tools with which they have a partnership.

Thanks to the open API, there are features available in Kontentino. However, some of those features are “locked” in the internal API. Therefore, it is not possible to implement them in Kontentino (or any other third-party app tool) unless the social platforms themselves change their API conditions.

With the basics covered, let’s look at the list of API limitations you may encounter in Kontentino. 👀

LinkedIn API limitations

  • Tagging personal profiles

The LinkedIn API allows tagging only Business/Company profiles.

  • Scheduling and publishing carousel/PDF formats

As platforms create new APIs and make them available, they can also revoke their APIs and limit third-party platforms from accessing them – publishing carousel/PDF post format (i.e. multi-photo posts) is one such example.

In case LinkedIn renews the API, the option of posting carousels/PDFs will again become available in Kontentino. Currently, the scheduling and publishing of carousel/PDF formats are only available directly on LinkedIn.

  • Changing a video thumbnail

Facebook API limitations

  • Tagging a person in a photo

You can tag a person’s profile in the photo of a post directly on Facebook once the post is scheduled from Kontentino. It’s also possible to tag a person in a post before publishing, thanks to the option to export posts in advance.

  • Tagging a product

You can tag a product to your post directly on Facebook once it’s scheduled from Kontentino. It’s also possible to tag a product in a post before publishing, thanks to the option to export posts in advance.

  • Adding a location

You can add a location to your post directly on Facebook once it’s scheduled from Kontentino. It’s also possible to add a location in a post before publishing, thanks to the option to export posts in advance.

  • Scheduling poll posts

  • Publishing posts to events

  • Exporting multi-image posts in advance

Due to Facebook’s API, multi-image posts can’t be exported in advance, so you cannot apply particular edits to the posts, as it’s possible only directly on Facebook, ahead of time.

Instagram API limitations

  • Instagram Direct Publishing

Due to Instagram’s API limitations, users cannot add texts, stickers, music, locations, and other features when using the Direct Publishing method for Instagram Stories in Kontentino.

If you wish to use these features, switch to the Manual Publishing method.

🌶️ Hot tip: Thanks to Instagram’s recent update, you can now auto-publish Reels directly via Kontentino.
