Supporting Healthy Eating

This guidance aligns with Scotland's 'Setting the Table' nutritional standards and Food Standards Scotland requirements for childcare settings.

Food Safety

  • Always wash hands before preparing or serving food

  • Store food at correct temperatures (fridge below 5Β°C)

  • Check use-by dates and never serve out-of-date food

  • Keep raw and cooked foods separate

  • Clean and disinfect food preparation areas before and after use

Allergies and Dietary Requirements

  • Obtain full details of any allergies or dietary requirements from parents

  • Keep this information easily accessible

  • Always check food labels for allergens

  • Know what to do if a child has an allergic reaction (see Medication guidance)

  • Respect cultural and religious food requirements

Healthy Eating Practices

  • Follow the family's instructions on meals and snacks

  • Encourage children to try a variety of foods

  • Make mealtimes positive and relaxed

  • Offer water regularly throughout the day

  • Supervise children during mealtimes to prevent choking

Feeding Infants

  • Follow parents' specific instructions for formula preparation or expressed milk

  • Never microwave bottles – warm in a bowl of hot water

  • Test milk temperature before feeding
