Preventing the Spread of Infection
Good infection control protects both the children in your care and you. These practices align with Public Health Scotland guidance for childcare settings.
Hand Hygiene
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
Always wash hands: before preparing food, after using the toilet, after nappy changes, after wiping noses, and after handling animals
Teach and encourage children to wash their hands regularly
Use hand sanitiser when soap and water are not available
Cleaning and Hygiene
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces (door handles, toys, highchairs)
Use disposable gloves when dealing with bodily fluids
Dispose of nappies and tissues in sealed bags
Ensure potties are cleaned after each use
When a Child is Unwell
Know the family's policy on caring for unwell children
Contact parents promptly if a child becomes unwell during your care
Children with vomiting or diarrhoea should stay home for 48 hours after symptoms stop
Follow NHS guidance on childhood illnesses and exclusion periods
Your Own Health
Do not work if you have symptoms of infectious illness
Inform your employer if you are unwell so alternative arrangements can be made
