Preventing the Spread of Infection

Good infection control protects both the children in your care and you. These practices align with Public Health Scotland guidance for childcare settings.

Hand Hygiene

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

  • Always wash hands: before preparing food, after using the toilet, after nappy changes, after wiping noses, and after handling animals

  • Teach and encourage children to wash their hands regularly

  • Use hand sanitiser when soap and water are not available

Cleaning and Hygiene

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces (door handles, toys, highchairs)

  • Use disposable gloves when dealing with bodily fluids

  • Dispose of nappies and tissues in sealed bags

  • Ensure potties are cleaned after each use

When a Child is Unwell

  • Know the family's policy on caring for unwell children

  • Contact parents promptly if a child becomes unwell during your care

  • Children with vomiting or diarrhoea should stay home for 48 hours after symptoms stop

  • Follow NHS guidance on childhood illnesses and exclusion periods

Your Own Health

  • Do not work if you have symptoms of infectious illness

  • Inform your employer if you are unwell so alternative arrangements can be made
