Keeping kids safe while cooking

Updated over a week ago

Cooking with kids is a brilliant activity. It's fun, creative, and educationalโ€”involving reading, math, culture, and practical skills. Plus, you get something yummy to eat at the end!

Before You Start
โ€‹

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Never leave children unsupervised in the kitchen

๐Ÿ‘• Have children roll up sleeves and tie back long hair

๐Ÿช‘ Use a stable stool or chair if they can't reach the counter

๐Ÿงผ Wash hands thoroughly and dry them completely to prevent slippery grips

While Cooking

๐Ÿณ Turn pot handles inward so they can't be accidentally pulled

๐Ÿ”ช Keep a close eye when children use sharp tools

๐Ÿง… After handling onions, garlic, or chili, have kids wash hands immediately to avoid eye irritation

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ Wear aprons to keep clothes clean and prevent distractions from spills

Emergency Response

๐Ÿ”ฅ For burns: Rinse with cool water immediately for at least 10 minutes

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ If anything gets in their eyes: Rinse immediately with clean water

๐Ÿš’ Always know where your first aid kit is located

Finishing Up

๐Ÿ”Œ Double-check that the stove and oven are turned off

๐Ÿงน Clean up together as part of the activity

๐Ÿ‘ Praise safe behaviour to reinforce good habits

Remember: The kitchen is a perfect classroom for teaching responsibility and safety while creating wonderful memories together!
