You can look after your own kids, as long as you stick within the Ofsted ratios.

  • Under the EYFS rules, you are allowed to look after up to six children under the age of 8.

  • Of these six children, only three can be ‘young children’, and of those three, only one can be aged under 1 year old.
    - A child is a ‘young child’ until 1st September following their 5th birthday.

  • All of these ratios include your own children.

  • Of course, looking after your own children will affect how much income you earn, as you’re able to take on less paid-for children.
    - You can always take on an assistant through Koru Kids, which will double your ratios and enable you to care for more children.

Can I do the school run for my own kids?

We’d strongly encourage you to find an alternative solution for your own school run, which may involve using another parent to do school drop off and pick up.

  • This is because doing the school run would disrupt your daily routine as a childminder, as you’d need to take the little ones to and from school twice a day, every day, which will affect the activities you can do, meal times and potentially nap time too.

  • This is less of an issue if the school is just down the road from you, but if it is a 20 minute walk away this is where it potentially becomes a problem.
