How do we reference nannies?

Updated this week

How we reference at Koru Kids

At Koru Kids, all nannies listed on our platform have passed our referencing standards. We collect references before a nanny appears in your search results, giving you peace of mind from the start and saving time at the job offer stage.

We check at least two references for every candidate. Our reference process focuses on the specific skills and qualities that matter most in childcare. After placing thousands of nannies with families, we’ve refined the key questions to ask, and we make sure every reference counts.

Who can provide a reference?

Not everyone is eligible to give a reference. Here's what we look for:

  • No self-references – Nannies cannot write their own references. We check for this and reject any candidates who try.

  • No family or partners – References from partners, family, or extended family members aren’t accepted.

  • No fellow Koru Kids nannies – We usually don’t allow references from other Koru Kids nannies, though we may make an exception in some social cases.

We always require at least one formal reference, typically from a professional such as an employer or an academic, for those new to the job market. We also accept character references to support this.

If the referee has worked with the candidate, we confirm their working relationship and ask specific questions about the nanny’s role.

Most importantly, we ensure that at least one referee has seen the candidate care for children. Depending on the child’s age, we tailor our questions to reflect the relevant childcare experience.

To maintain quality, all referees must confirm they are answering truthfully and to the best of their knowledge. Any references written using AI (yes, we check!) are automatically rejected.

Viewing a Nanny’s References

You can find a nanny’s references on their profile, under the Vetting tab.

If they’re not visible, don’t worry, just email us at care@korukids.co.uk and we’ll send you a copy.

Please note: We aren’t able to share referees’ contact details.

If you’d like to speak to a referee directly, we recommend asking the nanny if they can put you in touch.
