What is a limited edition?

A limited edition is a set number of prints or copies of a particular artwork that will be sold. This exclusivity can increase the desirability and value of your artwork, and we strongly encourage you to create limited editions, as well as adding a certificate of authenticity (LINK).

At Lama, we acknowledge the importance of accurately counting and managing these editions. This article provides clarity on how limited editions are counted and managed on our platform.

How it works

When this feature is activated on one of your print editions, our system automatically tracks the number of times this print size has been ordered. Whether the order comes from one of your Store sales or from one of your manual Studio orders, it keeps count and informs you how many copies are left.

Once all copies of the limited edition are sold, the product will no longer be available for sale on your Store (indicated as "sold out") and you won't be able to order it manually in the Studio.

πŸ“Œ Important rules

1. The limited editions counting system works regardless of the variant you're selling.

For example, let's say you have an A4 Edition with two variants - "Variant A" and "Variant B." If you're limiting this edition to 10 copies, you'll be able to order 10 copies in total, not 10 copies for each variant. So, if you order Variant A twice and Variant B once, you'll have 7 copies left in total.

2. For the same artwork, you can choose to set different edition numbers for the different editions you have.

For example, you might limit the A4 edition to 30 prints, and set A3 edition to 20.

Setting-up a limited edition

To create a limited edition, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to your artwork Studio product page and scroll to the down to the edition tab you want to activate this feature for.

  2. In the "Edition" card, click on the "Edit" icon.

  3. A popup will appear. Enter the "edition number" (ie. the total number of copies -e.g., 30 copies). If you've already sold/ordered some copies in the past, you can set the number of copies left (e.g., 28 copies left out of 30 if you've already sold/ordered 2 copies in the past). Save your changes.

  4. This edition is now limited. Note that your edition tag now indicates that your edition is a limited, and next to your orders count, you will see the number of copies left to order (in our example, "28/30 left").

Editing the number of copies left to order

Let's say that now you want to edit the number of copies left to order. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click again on the "Edit" icon next to your edition tag

  2. A popup will appear where you can enter the number of copies left to order. Enter your number and save your changes.

  3. The number of copies left has been modified, and you can see the modification next to your order count.

Managing multiple editions

You can choose to set limits for other editions of the same artwork. We advise you to follow this rule : the bigger the print size, the lower the number of reproductions.

For example, you might limit the A4 edition to 30 prints, and set A3 edition to 20.
