A bit about me (Tessa Shepperson)

A fair question!

I am Tessa Shepperson and I have been working in the law and specialising in Landlord & Tenant work for a very long time.

I initially worked as an unqualified 'litigation assistant' in the 1980's in London.

Then after taking the London External Law Degree (which I studied for while working) and passing my Law Society Finals (with merit), I qualified as a solicitor in 1990.

I did my 'articles' (as we called it then) and once qualified, worked as an assistant solicitor, in a firm in Norwich (Cozens Hardy) where I specialised in property related work.

TJ Shepperson solicitors

In 1994 I set up my own firm and for the next 19 years I practised as a 'sole practitioner' law firm, TJ Shepperson.  I initially did a variety of work including legal aid tenant work, and indeed the firm obtained a Legal Aid Franchise in 1995.

However by 1999 I had taken the decision to stop doing legal aid work and specialise in work for private landlords.  Also at that time I was commissioned to write a book on lettings for the legal publishers Law Pack.  This is still advertised on the LawPack website but as it has not been updated for some time it is seriously out of date.

Landlord Law

I had always been  fascinated by the Internet and by 2000 I had set up a basic website.  This had a page where I answered questions from readers - and it was through that, that I found that many landlords and tenants had no idea what their legal rights and obligations were.

This prompted me to set up a special online service to help them which I called 'Landlord Law'.  It was launched in November 2001 and was a success from the start - despite the fact that considerably fewer people then had internet access!

I have run it ever since.

Other things

As well as being a solicitor, I also served on the board of a local legal charity in Norwich for eight years.  I then, in 2003, became the Honorary Secretary of the Norfolk and Norwich Law Society, as post which I held for seven years.

My Landlord Law Blog was set up in 2006 and you can read posts from it here.

Recent Developments

The Landlord Law online service was so successful that over time I found that most of my income came from Landlord Law rather than the solicitors practice.  And so I took the step of closing the law firm down in 2013.

That initial Landlord Law website which was set up in 2001 has long gone and we built the third site - a totally new build - in 2018.  It  went live in December of that year.

We also put on regular training events, sometimes in collaboration with the NRLA.

So that is my story in short.  You can read a longer version on my Landlord Law Blog here.

And finally
