What if I have adopted or imported my pet from abroad?

Updated over 2 months ago

You do not need a veterinary certificate to take out insurance if you have adopted an animal from abroad. The general waiting period remains 30 days from the start of the insurance. Please note that the insurance can only start once the animal is in Germany. However, you are welcome to take out the insurance before your pet arrives. Please make sure that the start date of the insurance is set to the day the animal moves in with you at the earliest.

When taking out the insurance, you will be asked to specify a prominent breed. We understand that this can be a challenge with mixed breed dogs of unknown origin. For us, it is not so important that the chosen breed is "correct". It is more important that the general size and shape matches the chosen breed(s) and if you are having difficulty determining a breed or are unsure, you can always contact us via chat or email and send us a picture of your pet so that we can help you choose a suitable breed.

The following applies to animals from abroad:

Tests for Mediterranean diseases (travel illnesses) are not included in the preventive budget, which means that the costs of such tests cannot be reimbursed. You can find an overview of all benefits included in the preventive budget in our insurance conditions (see section 3.2. Scope of benefits of health insurance, paragraph f).

In addition, we cannot cover treatment for Mediterranean diseases as part of the insurance, as it cannot be ruled out that your pet may have contracted Mediterranean diseases before travelling to the country and therefore before taking out the insurance.

Other illnesses or injuries that your dog or cat brings with them (i.e. pre-existing conditions) are also excluded from the insurance cover. Further details can be found in our general terms and conditions of insurance on our website or in your Lassie app.
