In Card-Only installations, the Card Reader is typically mounted in place of the existing coin drop once it has been removed. Unlike with Hybrid Coin + Card installations, the Card Reader, Depending on your machine’s make and model, will sit over the coin drop opening or the coin box opening. This general guide shows how the reader should be mounted on most machines.

Step 1: Examine Your Reader Kit
Before you begin, confirm you ordered Card-Only (no coin usage) reader kits. Hybrid Card Reader kits typically use different mounting hardware that can be difficult to adapt for a Card-Only installation.
Card-Only reader kits typically include the following hardware or some variation of it. Depending on your machine’s make and model, some parts may look different or may not be included:
Backplate
Highly dependent on the machine make and model. The backplates are designed to completely cover any holes left by removing the coin drop, or in some cases (Dexter machines) any holes left by removing the coin box (in which case a coin drop block-out plate is provided with the reader kit).
Here are some example backplates you may receive:
Part #: 01-05-50
Part #: 01-05-51
Part #: 01-05-20
Part #: 01-05-65Part #: KIT-DEXTER01 (Dexter backplate; fully assembled)
Step 2: Inspect the Machine
Identify the coin drop and coin box on the machine. This is the area where the reader will likely be mounted. Whether the reader is mounted over the coin drop or the coin box depends on whether your kit includes a coin drop block-out plate (usually only for Dexter machines).
The examples below show two scenarios, depending on whether your kit included a coin drop block-out plate for the machine you’re working with. Not every machine requires one.
Step 3: Mount and Test the Reader
Start by mounting the Card Reader on one machine, over the coin drop or coin box, using the criteria from the steps above. Your kit includes nuts and bolts to secure the reader, and the hardware will match the backplate you received. Test the reader to make sure it starts the machine and that neither the machine’s components nor the reader’s components are affected by your installation.
Once you’ve confirmed the placement is suitable, use it as a template for the remaining machines of the same make and model.
Note that in most cases, the Card Reader's plastic enclosure needs to be mounted to the reader's mounting backplate first, then the assembled Card Reader is mounted onto the machine:
An exception is some Dexter machines, where the backplate is two pieces.
One piece mounts to the machine, one piece mounts to the Card Reader enclosure, and the two pieces are joined with a nut that can be accessed from the outside of the machine once installed:
Examples of Mounted Card Readers
Below are examples of where our Card Readers have been mounted in Card-Only installations. Use them as a reference only. Even if a machine looks similar, we may send you different hardware which will determine whether to mount over the existing coin drop or coin box.
Removing Card Readers from Machines
Except for Dexter machines that use the two-piece mounting hardware, to remove an installed Card Reader from a machine, you'll need to access the inside of the machine to get at the mounting nuts holding the reader to the machine.
This will heavily depend on the type of machine you have, and the type of mounting backplate the Card Reader is installed on.
In general, there are three main styles of machines which dictate where you'll open the machine to get access to the Card Reader's mounting hardware:
Single-pocket machines with a top service lid
These typically have a key to open the entire top lid of the machine:
Once the lid is open, you should be able to see the nuts which hold the Card Reader mounting backplate to the machine itself:
Stack machines where a panel opens from the middle of the machine
This is typical on stack dryers, but single-pocket machines can also have a panel that opens up from the front of the machine. These panels can be a door that opens up, or the entire panel can be pulled out once unlocked:
Top-load machines which usually have a panel that opens from the top
These types of machines typically use a Metered Case mounting bracket, which emulates how a coin slide is installed on top load machines. These will usually have a door at the top of the machine which can be opened to access the reader mounting hardware:
