Do you need a business name?

If your business will operate under the same name as listed on your ABN, then you will not need to register a business name.

If your business is a Soletrader/Individual, your default business name will be your full legal name by default, e.g. Arya Lee Appleton.

If your business is a Partnership, your default business name will match your ABN details e.g. A. Appleton & S. Smith.

If you registered a company (Pty Ltd), you will have automatic ownership of the business name that is the same as your company. eg The Example Group Pty Ltd can also trade as The Example Group. (removing legal element Pty Ltd)

If would like to trade under a name other than your ABN, you will need to have that name registered with ASIC.

The name will need to be registered before it can be used on invoices, marketing or in your bank accounts.
