Lean PlanDo provides a list of pre-defined reasons that are common causes for work delays in construction projects. Project teams can use this pre-defined list to site the delay reasons whenever a activity or task is delayed in the project. Please find below the delay reasons used in Lean PlanDo:
Access/ space - Site readiness, e.g. the storage area has not been cleared for the next activity on site.
Approval/permit
Client decision - e.g. change in design
Contracts - contractual issues causing project delay
Drawings - e.g. lack of drawing information and unable to proceed with work
Defects/rework - e.g. low quality work need to re-work
Equipment - e.g. crane is not available
Inspection - additional inspection is carried out by authority
Labor - shortage of labor to carry out the work
Logistics/storage - e.g. lack of storage space will cause the material to be returned to supplier
Material - e.g. delivery of material to site was delayed
Method statement - e.g. additional time for new method statement due to re-design
Minor / temp pre-requisite work
Request for Information (RFI)
Safety requirement
Re-scheduling - due to nature of the work sequence on site
Unforeseen site conditions - e.g. ground condition
Weather - e.g. stop work due to raining

Delay Classification (Overview)
Delay classification charts show the classification of the reason for delays in activities, tasks or constraints. The charts and tables are sorted based on their occurrences and their impact to the project. Refer images below (click on the images to enlarge).
Chart 1:
Chart 1 sorts delay reasons based on numbers of times they were sighted as the reason for a delay. It can be seen that Materials was the most used delay reason (203 times) followed by Schedule error (171 times).
Chart 2:
Chart 2 sorts delay reasons based on the number of days they delayed the project. It can be seen that the major reason for delay in the project is Schedule error that caused the project to delay by 194 days.
