Delay Mitigation is a process to assess and carry out measures to prevent further delay based on the current circumstances.
Examples of delay mitigation in construction industry include:
Adopt an alternative construction methodology, or sequence
Proceed inefficiently to achieve some measure of progress
Add additional shifts such as night work into the program
Increase resources to make up time
Relocate or demobilize some or all resources, until the issue is resolved
Figure No. 1
Figure No. 1 shows the Weekly delays and mitigation graph.
The orange bars above x-axis denote the project delays and yellow bars below the x-axis denote the project advances / delay mitigation for each week.
The different delays and mitigation shown are mentioned below:
Actual Delay - All delays to the project that are caused due to activities or tasks inside the Do-week of the lookahead are actual delays
Forecast Delay - All project delays caused by activities or tasks outside (to the future) of the Do-week in the lookahead.
Actual Mitigation - All project delay mitigation (advances to project end date) that are caused due to advance of task or activity inside the Do-week are actual mitigation.
Forecast Mitigation - All project delay mitigation that are caused due to advance of task or activity outside the Do-week are forecast mitigation.
Effective Delay/Mitigation - The effective delay in a project is derived using the below formula -
Total project delays - total project advances
This value is computed for each week in the project and plotted in the above graph indicated with the blue line.
Let's see an example in figure No. 2 below:
Figure No. 2:
Figure No. 2 shows the actual delay is 0 days, forecast delays is 25 days, the activity has been advanced for 50 days and thus, there is advancement of 25 days which has helped to mitigate the overall delay as for the week of 22 May 2018.
Figure No. 3 (click to enlarge the image):
Figure No. 3 shows the weekly productivity improvement and delay mitigation effort plotted as a line graph.
Note:
The productivity improvement is the ratio of total duration shortened over the total base duration of all completed leaf level activities computed every week.
The delay mitigation effort is the ratio of total duration shortened over total extended duration of all completed leaf level activities computed every week.
Productivity improvement and delay mitigation effort gives an idea of how the team is working to complete the project on time by mitigating the project delays and improving completion times. Higher the values better the chances of the project finishing on time.
