General
Who is Leap for?
Leap is for software developers with a year or more of experience, who want to improve their spoken English to perform better in their roles, land international jobs, and earn higher salaries.
Do I need to be a developer to join Leap?
Yes, at this time, you need to be a developer with at least one year of experience in order to join Leap.
What English level do I need to join Leap?
To join Leap sessions, you need to have at least an A2+ level of spoken English. This ensures you can communicate effectively with your partner during the sessions.
If you are unsure about your level, you should still apply. The platform will guide you through a fun and quick English-speaking test before your first session.
How does Leap work?
Leap sessions are with other programmers also focused on improving their English. Here is how it works:
There is a learning journey designed to help software developers improve their English so they can land international jobs. The journey consists of a series of sessions, each one with a specific learning goal.
Users choose a weekly schedule of classes/sessions to help them build strong practice habits.
When a session starts, users are introduced to the theory learning goal of the session (e.g. practicing the past simple) and an applied goal (e.g. practicing using English for behavioral interviews).
The theory is followed by a few minutes of individual interactive practice.
After 10 minutes, they join their practice partner of the day, another software developer of a similar level.
For 40 minutes, the platform guides them through having a fun conversation that is relevant to their careers, making English practice feel natural and enjoyable.
After their speaking practice, they have 10 minutes to review the detailed feedback we generate from their conversation and some personalized exercises for the finalize their learning.
Every month, students can also complete a simple assessment to track how their English has improved and how close they are to becoming fluent.
What makes Leap different from other English-learning platforms?
Leap is designed specifically for developers to improve their spoken English through speaking with peers. Our learning activities are tailored to technical contexts like coding interviews, standups, and team interactions. Plus, our AI feedback ensures they’re improving in the areas that matter most.
How does a Leap session compare with a class with an English teacher?
We know that some people prefer a more traditional learning approach. The advantages of Leap are:
You spend more time speaking in English than in a class with a teacher and a group, which directly improves your fluency.
You always speak about programming topics that interest you and help you learn how to work as a programmer in English.
We offer more detailed feedback than what a teacher can provide after every session.
You also network with other software developers who will soon start international careers too.
Is Leap an app to learn English?
No, Leap is an online school.
We offer a learning path to improve your English fluency by speaking with other developers and improving your pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.
Do I need to install any software to use Leap?
No, you can access Leap from your browser. Please join all sessions from your desktop or laptop.
What is the available schedule for Leap sessions?
We offer sessions Monday through Friday in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. You can personalize your schedule based on the available days and hours when you start your subscription.
Can I change my weekly schedule of sessions?
Yes, as often as you prefer.
What if I miss a session?
If you miss a session for any reason, you can reschedule it for a new date.
Learning & Progress
What kind of feedback do I get?
In every session, Leap provides detailed AI feedback on your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. You also have access to a monthly assessment to see how your English is improving towards your fluency goal.
How will I receive feedback?
We record the audio of every practice session you participate in. After the session, we review the audio and, almost immediately, give you feedback on your pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.
You then get personalized recommended interactive activities to improve those areas.
You are also be able to see your progress in a graph so that you can measure how fast you're learning towards your fluency goal.
Will I really be able to speak fluently in 6 months?
Yes, but it will require commitment and hard work from your side. The best way to get fluent is by speaking and that’s what you’ll do with Leap.
When you join, we will test your level and will let you know if you are ready for Leap.
After that, you will start participating in multiple practice sessions every week that will help you lose your fear to speak.
After each session, you will get personalized feedback and recommendations to improve the areas that need the most work.
How much time do I need to dedicate per week?
You need to participate in, at least, two practice sessions per week. Each session lasts one hour.
You can complete up to five practice sessions per week if you want. The more you do, the faster you will see the results.
After each session, you will also need some time to review your personalized feedback and complete the recommended improvement activities.
How do the 1:1 conversations with other developers work?
At the beginning of each practice session, you get paired with another developer.
Together, you go through a series of guided activities designed to encourage conversation and help you actively practice English, focusing on pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary.
The activities are related to software engineering, so feel fun and natural to you, even in English.
Do you have a learning path?
Yes, we have a structured learning path consisting of 96 sessions. Each session has an English learning objective—focused on pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary—supported by theory (videos) and interactive exercises. We've designed each session so that, by discussing programming topics with your peers, you progressively improve these skills.
What if I have a bad internet connection?
Unfortunately you cannot participate in sessions if your internet is not stable as we require audio and video connection to join Leap sessions.
What if I have technical issues during a session?
If you experience technical issues during a session, our coordinator will work with you to resolve them, and if it’s not possible, you can reschedule your session.
How long does it take to see improvement?
With consistent effort and at least 3 sessions per week, you can expect it to take around 2 months to see good improvements in your fluency.
However, most users start feeling more confident and lose the fear of speaking in English after the first session or two.
What happens if I get paired with someone at a different skill level?
We aim to pair you with other users with a similar English level. They might be a little higher or lower, but not a lot. Leap sessions are designed to help both partners practice and improve.
Will I always be paired with someone new? Can I choose my speaking partners?
No, you can’t choose your speaking partners. Sometimes, you will be paired with someone new, and sometimes, you will get paired with a previous partner, depending on the schedules chosen.
