Understanding Student Progress and Mastery

Updated this week

TL;DR: Visit the Performance tab on any student profile to see how they are growing. SparkAI automatically tracks their mastery and finds learning gaps based on the lesson feedback you provide.

The Performance tab is your home for seeing how much your student has achieved. It helps you visualize their progress, find areas where they might need a little extra help, and celebrate their learning journey!

Using the Performance Tab

To see these insights, go to a Student Profile and click the Performance tab. This page gives you a clear view of your student's academic standing through several helpful tools:

  • Standards Progress: These bars compare your student's Operating Level (the level they are actually working at) against their Expected Level (the goal for their age) for each subject.

  • Academic Age: This helps you monitor how your student is performing compared to typical expectations. It shows if they are racing ahead or if they need more support in a specific area.

  • Gap Analysis: SparkAI looks at your chosen curriculum and your student's progress to find missing skills. It suggests exactly what to teach next so no steps are missed.

  • Skill Mastery: This is a list of specific skills your student has worked on. It shows you exactly which ones they have successfully mastered so far.

šŸ’” Good to know: SparkAI works in the background to update the Mastery Profile and perform Gap Analysis. These features use SparkAI credits to keep your data accurate.

How the Mastery Profile Works

Your student has a Mastery Profile that acts like a living map of their learning. It isn't just a static list; it grows and changes every time you teach a lesson or log an activity.

This profile is powered by the feedback you provide. When you tell the system how a lesson went, SparkAI updates the student's skills and suggests new goals. This makes the entire LearnSpark experience more personalized for your family.

Updating Performance with Feedback

The best way to keep the Performance tab accurate is to provide feedback after every lesson. There is no "complete" button—instead, your feedback tells the system the lesson is finished and how the student performed.

  1. Open a scheduled lesson from your Weekly Schedule or Dashboard.

  2. Scroll to the feedback section.

  3. Choose a Performance Rating to show how well your student understood the material.

  4. Add any Struggles or Gaps. If your student found a specific part hard, mention it here so SparkAI can adjust future lessons.

  5. Save your notes. This automatically updates the Mastery Profile and the Standards Progress bars. Great job keeping your records up to date!

āš ļø Heads up: If you don't provide feedback on lessons, the Gap Analysis tool won't know which skills your student has learned. This means your progress charts won't update!

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do the progress bars update?

The Standards Progress bars and Mastery Profile update whenever you submit feedback for a lesson or log an activity (like reading or outdoor time) that affects learning goals.

What is "Academic Age"?

Academic Age compares your student's current skills to typical grade-level standards. It helps you see if they are working at, above, or below the level expected for their age in a specific subject.

Why does tracking performance use credits?

SparkAI does a lot of work behind the scenes, such as breaking down curriculum standards and mapping them to your student's unique profile. SparkAI credits cover these advanced calculations.

What is the difference between Operating and Expected levels?

The Operating Level is the actual level your child is working at right now. The Expected Level is the level usually expected for their age. SparkAI uses the difference between these two to find learning gaps.

Can I track progress for things like play or excursions?

Yes! When you use the Log Activity button on your Dashboard for things like outdoor time or reading, it helps build your student's mastery profile just like a formal lesson does.
