Updated this week

At Lebesgue, we're always working to give you the clearest and most accurate picture of your e-commerce business. That's why we're excited to let you know that we've updated our Business Report to align with the standard metric definitions used directly by Shopify and WooCommerce!

Why This Change? More Clarity and Confidence For You!

You might be wondering why we've made this update. It's all about making your life easier and your business decisions smarter:

  • Speak the Same Language: The numbers you see in Lebesgue will now directly match the terms and calculations you see in your Shopify and WooCommerce admin. This makes comparing and understanding your data across platforms much simpler.

  • Industry-Standard Clarity: By using these widely accepted definitions, you get a truer, more standardized view of your store's performance.

  • Better Decision-Making: When your data is clear, consistent, and easy to understand, you can make more confident choices to grow your business.

What are the main differences?

Legacy

New

Canceled orders

Excluded from Shop revenue and other revenue metrics, but shown as separate “Canceled revenue”

Shopify: Included in Gross Sales, accounted for in returns

WooCommerce: remain excluded.

Returns

Attributed to the day when the order was processed

Attributed to the day when the refund was processed

Your New Key Metrics Explained

Here’s a simple breakdown of the main metrics you'll now see in your Lebesgue Business Report, what they mean, how they're generally calculated, and why they’re important for your business:

Name

What it is

How it's Calculated

Why it Helps You

Gross Sales

The total sales value of your products before any discounts, returns, taxes, or shipping are considered.

Product Price x Quantity Sold (includes pending/unpaid orders; excludes test/deleted orders)

Shows you the pure, initial demand for your products before other factors. Great for seeing which items are most popular.

Discounts

The total monetary value of all discounts applied to orders (from discount codes, not "compare-at" prices).

Sum of all line item discounts + order-level discount shares.

Helps you understand the impact of your promotions on sales value and overall discount strategy effectiveness.

Returns

The total value of products that customers have returned.

Sum of the value of all returned goods; typically shows as a reduction from sales.

Vital for understanding customer satisfaction, product issues, and the true net value of your sales.

Total Sales

The grand total of all money related to orders, including taxes and shipping collected from customers.

Gross Sales - Discounts - Returns + Taxes + Duties + Shipping Charges + Fees

* Returns are attributed to the date of the return

Shows the overall sum of money that passed through your business for orders. Reflects what customers actually paid in total, including amounts you collected for others (like taxes).

Net Sales

Your actual revenue from products sold and kept, after discounts and returns. A key performance metric.

Gross Sales - Discounts - Returns

* Returns are attributed to the date of the return

Gives a very clear picture of the revenue your business earned from product sales. Excellent for judging core sales performance.

Shipping

The net amount you've collected from customers for shipping.

Shipping Charges Collected - Shipping Discounts Given - Shipping Amounts Refunded

Shows you the net income from shipping. Helps you see if your shipping charges are covering your actual shipping costs.

Taxes

The total amount of sales tax (or similar taxes like VAT/GST) collected on orders.

Sum of all taxes collected on orders.

Important for your financial accounting and understanding your tax obligations.

Average Order Value (AOV)

The average revenue you receive from each order, focusing on the value of goods after discounts but before returns.

(Gross Sales - Discounts) / Number of Orders

Helps you understand how much customers typically spend on products per transaction. Great for tracking purchase behavior and upselling effectiveness.

Gross Profit

Your profit directly from product sales, after subtracting the cost of those products.

Net Sales - Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)

A critical measure of your business's core profitability from selling goods, before other operating or marketing expenses.

Mapping Your Legacy Metrics to New Definitions

Let's look at how some common legacy metrics you're used to seeing in Lebesgue translate to the new metrics:

Legacy Metric Name

Legacy Definition

New Closest Shopify-Aligned Metric

Key Differences & Important Notes

Shop Revenue

Line Item Prices + Taxes + Shipping - Discounts + Tips

*Cancelled orders excluded

Shop Revenue

WooCommerce - the definition remains the same.

Shopify - new metric includes the cancelled orders.

Shop Net Revenue

Shop Revenue after accounting for returns

Total Sales,

Net Sales

Total Sales and Shop Net Revenue differ only on the way the returns are attributed - Total Sales looks at the date of the refund, while Shop Net revenue looks at the day of the order.

Net Sales goes a step further and removes also the taxes, shipping costs and other fees.

Returns Revenue

Shop Revenue (Legacy) - Shop Net Revenue (Legacy)

Returns

The main difference is that the new Returns metric is showing based on the day of the return, while the previous Returns revenue was showing on the day of the order.

Discounts

Value of discounts applied

Discounts

Conceptually the same, but the new Discounts metric is standardized as per Shopify's calculation (from discount codes, pre-tax) and is a direct input into Net Sales and Total Sales.

Shipping

Shipping charges collected

Shipping

The new Shipping metric (Charges - Discounts - Refunds) provides a precise net figure for shipping revenue collected from customers.

Taxes

Taxes collected

Taxes

Taxes metric is a standardized component that feeds into Total Sales.

Other metrics that will be affected by this change

Some other metrics that rely on the updated core metrics will also be affected. While their definitions remain the same, their values may shift slightly due to changes in how revenue is calculated.

Metrics that may be impacted include:

  • Demand

  • Demand Margin

  • AOV (Average Order Value)

  • Percentage Returned

  • Return on Investment (ROI)

  • Profit

  • MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio)

Why are my numbers still not completely matching Shopify / WooCommerce?

  1. Order Exclusion: If you’ve excluded certain orders in the Lebesgue app (via Shop settings → Order exclusion), your metrics will differ from those in Shopify/WooCommerce.

  2. Order Edits: Edited orders may have revenue attributed to a different date than in Shopify. While daily totals might differ, overall revenue should match.

  3. Cash on Delivery: For cash-on-delivery orders, Lebesgue attributes revenue based on the processed date, which may differ from Shopify’s attribution.

What Happens to My Custom Metrics?

Your existing custom metrics will automatically be updated to use the corresponding new metrics — no action is needed on your part.
If you’d prefer more control, you can always create new custom metrics based on the updated definitions.

What to Expect Next

We're confident these industry-standard metrics will give you an even more powerful and intuitive way to track your e-commerce performance right here in Lebesgue. This change will roll out to your Business Report starting July 8th, 2025. For a period after that, you'll see some clearly labeled "Legacy" metrics alongside the new ones to help you adjust, before the old ones are fully retired on August 1, 2025.
