What Is Seismic Learning for Chrome?

Seismic Learning for Chrome (formerly Lessonly for Chrome) is a browser extension that provides unmatched access to learning content from anywhere in the Google Chrome browser. Learning for Chrome allows you to map lessons to specific webpages and URLs. Mapped lessons will then be pushed to learners when they navigate to that website, giving them the information they need when they need it and where they need it.

Value for admins…

Increase awareness of high-priority lessons, improve adoption of Learning , and provide employees training content while keeping them on task.

Value for learners…

Learning for Chrome is the easiest way to access learning on the web. Learners can find all the information they need quickly and easily, creating a learning experience that is both helpful and efficient.

Easy Access...

Learning for Chrome allows users to access all the knowledge in their Learn tab without opening Learning itself. Learners can search their learning content from the extension, take lessons, or ask a designated expert for help, all without having to switch tabs in their browser.

How to Install Seismic Learning for Chrome

Learning for Chrome can be downloaded from this page in the Chrome Web Store. Alternatively, you can navigate to the store itself, then search "Seismic Learning." Select the tile pictured below, then click Add to Chrome.

Once installed, an authorization window opens prompting the user to insert the full domain of their Learning (formerly Lessonly) instance (e.g., yourdomain.lessonly.com).

Select Sign In to verify the account and activate the extension.

How to Activate the Extension for an Organization

There is the ability to automatically install the extension across a team if users already use Google Apps and the Chrome browser.

Check out this blog post for step-by-step instructions.

Chrome Extension URL Mapping

Before you begin: You must be an admins or a user with content ownership permission to map lessons to URLs.

To begin mapping URLs, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the Learning interface, and then select Chrome Extension URL Mapping.

On the mapping overview page, you can view, edit, and delete existing mapped content, or create a new mapped URL.

To create a new map, select New URL. This adds a data entry row with three parts to configure.

  1. Under Website URL, enter the URL to which content should be mapped, then choose whether the Chrome extension should appear on this URL only, or on the URL and all its subpages.

  2. Under Related Content, add the lessons, paths, or other links you wish learners to see when they land on the mapped URL. "Lesson start" is selected by default, but you can also link to particular sections of a lesson.

  3. Under Groups, you'll see which groups in your organization can access the content you selected. In the example above, the lesson "Anatomy of a Top-Notch Sales Call" has been added to the Learn page of the following groups: Sales Development, Everyone, and Account Executives.

If the correct groups fail to load in this column, you'll need to provide them with access via the Add to Learn control located on the lesson or path overview page.

💡 Important! If you add Related Content that hasn't been added to any group's Learn page, you'll see this message in the Groups column: "Not visible to any learners. Add this item to the Learn page to make it visible for Learning for Chrome."

Learner Point of View

When users arrive at a mapped URL, a Seismic Learning window appears in the bottom right corner, along with a notification in the extensions bar of the user's browser.

Selecting a lesson from this window takes the user directly to the lesson without opening Seismic Learning directly.

You can also use a search bar in the extension window to search the training content in your Learning library.

When content employs Learning's Ask the Expert feature, users can ask questions or provide feedback on content.

Use Cases and Mapping Recommendations

Suppose a company uses the Learning + Slack integration, and admins want their users to view the lesson they've created about Slack when they land on www.slack.com.

An admin would map the lesson about Slack to www.slack.com. Henceforth, users landing on www.slack.com will see the Learning lesson in the extension bar.

Keep in mind, these lessons must be on the user's Learn page in order to appear in the Chrome extension.

If you're looking for a place to start mapping, think of the top five web pages your team visits. What information are they searching for when they visit those pages? Do you have lessons that answer those questions?

Poll your team members to learn what maps they'd find helpful, and update your maps on a regular basis.

Extension Permissions

Learning requires Read and Write Permissions for the extension to work successfully.

Learning uses these permissions to read the URL and retrieve (or write to the browser) the appropriate content. Learning for Chrome collects website content, for example text, images, sounds, videos, and hyperlinks.

Troubleshooting

Extension Not Loading

Due to changes in web development, most websites do not reload pages. This hinders the Chrome extension from loading if various tabs are being used within the same website. If a website has been mapped to the extension but the extension isn't loading, select the extension or reload the page. The pop-up should now appear.

Webpage Behavior and Impact on Learner Progress

The behavior of the Chrome extension may differ depending on how the webpage is built, i.e., whether page content loads dynamically or not. If a user is mid-lesson within the Chrome extension, and the user navigates to another section in the mapped URL or their internal app/tool, the extension may do a full refresh. The user's place in the lesson will not be saved, but any selections made by the user, such as checkboxes, will be maintained. This behavior depends on whether a website loads pages in dynamic sections or refreshes the whole page.

  • If a user navigates to a site that loads sections dynamically, the Chrome extension will remain on the current section of the content. If a user clicks another portion of the page, it won't refresh the page, it will just open the new page immediately since it's already been preloaded.

  • If a user navigates to a site that refreshes the whole page, the Chrome extension will send the user back to the beginning of the lesson.
