Generating a Network Capture

When working with Learning Support, they may sometimes ask to collect a network capture. This can be used to record the HTTP data traffic of the affected application.

When doing so, please follow the steps below to provide the needed materials for the Learning Support team.

  1. In Google Chrome, navigate to the page in Learning experiencing an issue.

  2. At the top-right of the browser, select the Chrome menu ( ).

  3. Select Tools > Developer Tools.

The Developer Tools window opens as a docked panel at the side or bottom of Chrome.

Another route is to double-click on the screen and select Inspect.

Once opening the Developer Tools window, follow the below steps:

  • Select the "Console" tab.

  • Right-click anywhere in the console and select "Save as...."

  • Name the log file "Chrome-console.log."

Then...

  • Select the "Network" tab.

  • Select "Preserve log."

  • A red circle will appear at the top left of the Network tab. This means the screen capture has started.

If the circle is black, click the black circle to start recording activity in your browser.

  • Refresh the page and reproduce the problem while the screen capture is running.

  • After successfully reproducing the issue, right-click on any row of the activity pane and select "Save as HAR with Content."

Then send over both files to the Learning Support team and they'll include these files in the bug ticket to the Technical Support team.
