Why does it say I don't have permission when I'm the admin?

The four separate layers of access, and which one is usually blocking you.

Written by Kaylan Pepin

If you are an admin of your management group, you do have access to every business in your portal. So a permission message is not about business membership. It usually points at which portal you are in, which account you are signed in as, an invitation that was never accepted, or a deal that was shared at the deal level only.

Click through the walkthrough above to see the Manage access tab and the member list, then work through the checks below.

The four layers of access

  • Your management group. This is the top level, covering your brokerage and the people in it. Roles here are admin and member. Admins have access to every business in their portal.

  • The portal. You can run more than one portal, for example a separate portal per team or product, each with its own branding. Access to one portal does not carry over to another.

  • Business membership. Every client business has its own member list, managed from the Manage access tab on that business. Roles here are Business Owner, Collaborator and Partner. Business Owner is the top level role with full permissions to view the application, fill in details, upload documents and track progress. Collaborator and Partner let someone work on a deal without full owner control. These roles govern the people you invite onto a business, such as clients and partners.

  • Deal level access. Narrower again. When you share a specific deal's application, you are granting access to that one application, not to the business.

Check these in order

  1. Are you in the right portal? If you run more than one, confirm the business lives in the portal you are currently signed in to.

  2. Are you signed in as the right person? Check the email address you are logged in with. If a teammate invited you at a different address, the invitation created access for that address only.

  3. Did you accept the invitation? An invitation email creates the access when the link is used and a password is set. If it is still sitting unaccepted, check spam and confirm the invited address matches.

  4. Were you given deal level access only? If someone shared a single application with you, you will not have the rest of the business. Ask to be added on the business instead.

  5. Is your role on that business high enough? Collaborator and Partner are deliberately lighter than Business Owner. If you need to change the application or submit, you need Business Owner access. Open the business, go to the Manage access tab, and check the member list.

If a live deal is blocked, do not wait. Tell us the business name, the deal, the email address you are signed in with, and the exact wording of the message you are seeing, and we can check the access on our side and unblock it.
