How to Prevent Window Film Edge Lifting?

Updated over 2 months ago

Peeling, or curling of window film is uncommon but can occur due to the following factors:

  • Cold temperatures

  • Excessive slip solution

  • Dot matrix or frit edge coatings

  • Over-tensioned film roll

  • Potential film defects

Steps to Prevent Edge Lifting:

1. Install in the Right Temperature
Keep the installation area around 70°F for best adhesion. In cold conditions, use the car’s heater or a heat gun to warm the glass before applying the film.

2. Use the Correct Slip Solution
Avoid excessive soap, as it can weaken adhesion. Use a light mix of tint slime or baby shampoo and water for best results.

3. Prepare Dot Matrix or Frit Edges
Sand Method: Sand the dot matrix with 500-grit sandpaper for a smoother surface, then apply adhesive remover and scrub with a pad to remove residue.
Glue Method: Cover dots with Elmer's Purple School Glue Stick, apply tint, and squeegee upward with a wrapped card.

4. Seal and Secure Edges
After squeegeeing, run a hard card along the edges to press the film firmly. Wipe away any excess slip solution with a towel to ensure a strong bond.

5. Final Reinforcement
Allow the film to settle for a few minutes, then reapply pressure with a hard card. Use a heat gun if needed to further secure the edges.
