Why is such a dire warning found on everything from whole-grain bread to toothbrushes to fishing rods?
In 1986, California passed the “Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act”, also known as Proposition 65. As a result, companies who sell products in California that are made with or contain certain compounds are required to use this warning label. Initially, lawmakers sought to give consumers an abundance of information to make informed decisions. However, over the years, more and more substances have been added to the list, which now numbers nearly 1,000 chemicals! What began as a protective initiative has now become so cumbersome that many California consumers find it less of a reassurance and more a source of confusion.
Numerous foods, including organic fruits and vegetables, contain certain substances at many times higher than the levels generally allowed by Prop 65. This is because some of the Prop 65 limits are a mere 1/1000th of the FDA’s safe level.
Fruit and vegetables like strawberries, kale and sweet potatoes may not be required to carry a warning because the State of California acknowledges (Title 27, Division 4, Chapter 1, Article 5) substances like lead are present as an unavoidable result of plants being grown in naturally mineralized soil.
When plant-based foods are then used to make dietary supplements, it is understandable that trace amounts of these soil constituents may be present in the finished supplement product. But, as dietary supplements are not defined as “food”, according to Proposition 65 they must be sold with the warning label.
Most of our dietary supplements for people include plant-based ingredients and therefore a few of them may contain minuscule amounts of a chemical that calls for Prop 65 labeling when sold in the State of California. But rest assured that all Life’s Abundance nutritional products fall within the FDA’s guidelines for all of the chemicals included in California’s Proposition 65.
Life’s Abundance products that may be affected by Prop 65 labeling requirements include (as of Feb. 2017):
Plant Protein (Vanilla & Chocolate flavors)
Greens Blend
Multivitamin
If you’re not a California native, your first reaction to seeing a Prop 65 warning sticker might be one of shock. Learn why it's used!
