My dog has tried to drink his own urine. How concerned should I be?

First, there is no nutritional value in urine.

Does your dog have access to fresh drinking water at all times? This is absolutely imperative.

Dogs respond to attention whether it is negative or positive. Once they get a reaction from you, they will repeat the behavior to elicit a certain reaction. Rather than reprimanding your dog, we suggest that you ignore it.

Try positive reinforcement. Get something he likes – such as food, yogurt, or treats. When you see him drinking his urine, just give him the better choice (whatever you're offering) and reward him as he eats it. Be sure to do this away from where he just urinated as you don't want there to be an association with that.
