What causes disconnections?

There is a logical reason which causes disconnection. In brief, the VPN software and the VPN server both send each other a ping packet every 10 seconds to inform the other side that they are active and alive. If the VPN software doesn't receive this ping packet (or any other data) from the VPN server for more than 120 seconds it automatically assumes that the server is no longer available and then the VPN software disconnects. This happens because the ping packets are being either lost or blocked on the path between your device and the server. This could be a software or hardware router filtering these packets or an unstable Internet connection which causes packet loss.

What can you do?

  1. Change your VPN protocol and port: - The connection will work better when TCP is used instead of UDP.

  2. Change the Firewall settings of your device: - Sometimes router firewalls cause the disconnection problems because Wi-Fi routers usually grind the VPN to a stop after a few minutes of use. You can check Router / Windows / 3rd Party Firewall settings, disable your firewalls at first, temporarily and try again.

  3. Change your Server: - Try connecting to a different server, there may be an issue between your device and the LimeVPN server you are trying to connect.

  4. Change your DNS: - Sometimes the issue can get resolved after changing the DNS settings.

  5. Change your Network: - Sometimes changing your network can also stop frequent disconnection, try using a different network, such as a public Wi-Fi connection, to see if the connection problem is with your current Internet service provider (ISP).

  6. Change your Device: - Try connecting from another device to see if the issue is with the device.
