Smart Tax Delivery: Sending Tax Returns to Clients

Smart Tax Delivery allows firms to send tax returns to clients for review, electronic signature, and payment guidance through Liscio. Clients are guided step-by-step to review their return, sign required forms, and complete submission securely from desktop or mobile.

This process eliminates manual follow-ups and helps firms collect signatures faster during tax season.

Supported tax software includes:

  • UltraTax CS | Thomson Reuters

  • CCH ProSystem fx Tax | Wolters Kluwer

  • CCH Axcess Tax | Wolters Kluwer

  • Drake Tax | Drake Software

  • Lacerte | Intuit

  • ProSeries | Intuit

Before printing tax returns, carefully go through the printing instructions to ensure successful processing.

How to Send a 1040 Tax Return with Smart Tax Delivery

Step 1: Drag & Drop

  • Go to the Smart Tax page.

  • Drag and drop your completed tax return PDF into the Smart Tax Delivery box (or click to browse for the file).

  • Optionally, select an Owner who will manage this request.

Once uploaded, Liscio automatically creates a draft request.

Step 2: Review & Send

Before sending, review the generated request:

Balances Due

  • Highlights taxes due with vouchers and refunds.

Note: If your client has estimated tax penalties, please confirm whether you want the penalty included in the amount due. If desired, adjust the amount due so you can send the client the exact total you’d like reflected.

  • Estimate Tax Payments will show the amount due, the due date, and links to the appropriate federal or state payment website.

Return Review

  • Splits Federal, State, and Estimated Payments for easy client review.

Signing options

  • Two separate logins: each taxpayer signs individually

  • Same device signing: both signers can sign sequentially on one device

Set a due date for the client.

Optional settings:

  • Decide if identity verification (KBA) is needed.

  • Review the Estimated Tax Payment reminder setting.​

Click Send to deliver the tax return.

Client Notifications & Reminders

After a Smart Tax Delivery request is sent, Liscio automatically reminds the client to review and sign their tax return.

Initial Notification

  • Clients receive an email notification immediately after the delivery request is sent.

Automatic Reminder Schedule
If the request has not been completed, Liscio will send reminder notifications to the client at the following times:

  • One week before the due date

  • The day before the due date

  • The day it's due date

  • The day the request becomes overdue

  • Weekly reminders after the due date until the request is submitted

These automated reminders help reduce manual follow-up and keep clients on track to review, sign, and submit their tax return on time.

Step 3: Tracking Tax Return Completion

You can track the progress of the tax return from the Delivery Requests page.

Use the progress complete percentage to see whether the client has:

  • Opened the return

  • Reviewed the documents

  • Signed the e-file forms

  • Submitted the request

Where the Copy of the Tax Forms Is Stored

Once the client signs and submits the return:

  • Signed forms are stored in the Request record

  • They are also saved in the Liscio Vault (Files page)

  • Clients can access them anytime from their Files tab

After receiving the E-File forms, click Mark Complete to finalize the return delivery process.
