How and why we got started!

Back in 2021 there was a worldwide pandemic (who remembers that?).

During that period people in the UK were only allowed to leave their houses for important things and for one walk a day. 🚶

On several of these walks our founders saw an upsetting amount of litter on the streets in local parks. Not only this, but after doing some more research it became clear that this was an issue across the globe, not just the UK.

Litter damages wildlife, pollutes our rivers and seas, kills millions of animals every year, and it's such an easy thing to get right and change! 🌍

Our founders have a background knowledge in positive behaviour change and gamification, and so a question arose;

"How can we make people more litter aware, and encourage them to be more responsible with their own litter, as well as motivate them to bin any litter they spot?" 🤔

Ideas were thrown about, whiteboards were utilised and a eureka moment was had...

LitterLotto! 🤯

From experience we know that rewards are much more effective at changing behaviour than punishments (carrot vs stick) and that's our aim. Slowly but surely spreading the message that being responsible with litter isn't just good for the planet but also for your wallet!

We've been running for more than a year now and have have seen over 4,000,000 pieces of litter successfully binned through LitterLotto, not to mention over £300,000 worth of prizes awarded to our users. ❤️ 💷 🗑

We're still only at the beginning of our journey, but we're absolutely chuffed with what our community and users have achieved so far. We plan on helping many more local communities and organisations to be more responsible with litter and we look forward to clearing the world of litter, one piece at a time.

Remember, you've just got to #BinItToWinIt 🙌
