Import a CSV or Excel file

Bring a list you already have into a new Loopster table, choosing which columns to keep.

Written by Umer Ishaq

You can turn a .csv or .xlsx file into a new Loopster table in a few clicks. You choose which columns to bring in.

How do I import a file?

  1. Go to Home and click Import data.

  2. Choose Import CSV / XLSX. A dialog opens called "Create Table from CSV / XLSX".

  3. Drag and drop your file into the dialog, or click it to pick a file. Only .csv and .xlsx files are accepted.

  4. Check the preview. It shows the first 3 rows, and a line such as "3 of 3 columns selected".

  5. Click Continue.

The Create Table from CSV / XLSX dialog showing the file demo-companies.csv and a preview of the first three rows with the columns Company Name, Company Domain and Country, all ticked. The preview table is outlined in red.

The button changes to "Uploading…", then a message says "CSV import finished". Loopster opens a new table made from your file.

How do I leave out columns I don't need?

In the preview, untick the box for any column you don't want. The count changes, for example to "2 of 3 columns selected". The dialog says: "Import only columns you need to make the table faster."

The same dialog with the Country column unticked. The line Preview (First 3 Rows) - 2 of 3 columns selected is outlined in red.

The new table has only the columns you kept. For example, if you untick Country in a file with Company Name, Company Domain and Country, the table has Company Name and Company Domain.

What does the new table look like?

  • Loopster creates a new workbook and a new table. Both are named after your file.

  • Each row of the file becomes a row in the table.

  • Check Auto-run in the toolbar before you add a column that costs money. With Auto-run off, new rows and values do not run on their own. You start runs from a column or a row.

A column is missing from my new table

The import dialog can remember columns you unticked in an earlier import of a file with the same headers. Check the "x of y columns selected" line in the preview, tick the columns you want, and then click Continue.

Good to know

  • Each import creates a new workbook and table.

  • The dialog can remember columns you unticked in an earlier import of a file with the same headers. Always check the "x of y columns selected" line before you click Continue.

  • After the import, you can add columns with Add column.
