You can find all these settings in your Shopify Checkout and Customer Account options.

Review Shopify's customer accounts settings

Accounts in online store and checkout

Customers are automatically added to your loyalty program when they create a store account. They can do this by making a purchase in-store or online or by creating an account through your loyalty widget.

To review the following settings please follow these instructions:

1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings

2. In the side panel navigation, click Customer Accounts

3. Under Sign-in links, toggle the Show sign-in links button to on.

A Shopify settings page is open. The left side menu shows “Settings,” and “Customer Accounts” is selected. On the right, there is a section called “Sign-in links.” A switch labeled “Show sign-in links” is turned on so customers can create or log into their store account.

4. Under Choose which version of customer accounts to use, select the account log in method that best suits your store

📝Note: Marsello works with both of these customer account log in methods. Customers will be able to create an account at the end of the checkout process or sign out as a guest. In both cases, your customers will be added to your loyalty program and earn points for their purchases.

Shopify customer contact method (recommended)

With Shopify, you can choose which customer's unique identifier is related to their order.

Steps:

4. Scroll to Customer contact method

5. Under Select what contact method customers use to check out, select your preferred communication form.

This setting will depend on your store's marketing strategy:

  • Email: If you are planning to use email marketing only, then we would recommend updating your primary contact method to be Email

  • Phone number or email: If you are planning to use email and SMS marketing, then we would recommend updating your primary contact method to be Phone number or email

Under "Select what contact method customers use to check out," choose your preferred communication form based on your store's marketing strategy. For email marketing, select "Email." For both email and SMS marketing, select "Phone number or email."

Shopify customer information settings (recommended)

For a customer to be successfully added to your loyalty program, Marsello requires the customer's First Name, Last Name, and email address.

📝Note: By default, Shopify only requires last name selected.

Steps:

6. Scroll to Customer Information

7. Under Full name, select the Require first and last name checkbox

Scroll to "Customer Information" and under "Full name," select the "Require first and last name" checkbox.

8. Under Shipping address phone number, select Optional checkbox

Under "Shipping address phone number," select the "Optional" checkbox.

📝 Note: This creates a mobile number capture, so customers can enter their mobile number here if they've used email as their unique identifier.

Shopify marketing opt-in settings (recommended)

🏷️ SMS automations are unlocked with the SMS add-on.
🏷️ Email campaigns and automations are unlocked with the Marketing add-on.

If you are planning to use email or SMS marketing, you will need to give the customer the option to opt-in to receive marketing from your business.

Steps:

9. Scroll to Marketing Options

10. Next to Email, select the checkbox

11. Next to Preselect – Ensure this checkbox unselected

12. Next to SMS, select the checkbox

⚠️ Important: To comply with SMS and email laws and regulations, it's imperative that your customers have the ability to voluntarily opt-in. This helps to ensure compliance with SMS and Email Marketing standards.

Shopify abandoned cart email settings (recommended)

If you are using Marsello's Abandoned Cart Recovery email automation, we recommend that you disable your Shopify's Abandoned Checkout emails. This is to ensure customers that who have abandoned their shopping cart don't receive multiple abandoned cart emails

📝 Note: By default, Shopify have automatically enabled this in their settings.

Steps:

13. Scroll to Abandoned Checkout Emails section

14. Un-select the checkbox for Send abandoned checkout emails automatically

This will automatically turn off any of the other abandoned checkout settings

Scroll to the "Abandoned Checkout Emails" section. Unselect the checkbox for "Send abandoned checkout emails automatically." This will automatically disable the other abandoned checkout settings.
