What documents and stickers do I need to drive abroad?

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

Usually no, but it depends on your licence and destination:

You do not need an IDP if...

You might need an IDP if...

You have a UK photocard licence

You only have a paper licence

You're driving in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein

Your licence was issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man


Do I need a UK sticker on my car?

It depends on your number plate and where you’re driving:

You do not need a UK sticker if:

  • Your number plate includes the UK identifier and the Union Flag (Union Jack)

  • You’re driving in the Republic of Ireland

You do need a UK sticker if:

  • Your number plate only shows letters and numbers

  • Your plate has a GB identifier, or national flags (e.g., England, Scotland, Wales)

  • You’re driving in Spain, Cyprus, or Malta (these countries require a UK sticker no matter what’s on your plate)
