What should I do if I lost my vehicle key?

This article is for policyholders who have lost their car keys and need guidance on what to do next.

Step-by-step guide if you've lost your key

  1. Stay safe and secure
If you're not at home, find a safe place to wait until help arrives. Make sure your vehicle is parked safely and won't obstruct traffic.

  2. Check if you have AA Breakdown Cover

    • If your policy includes AA Breakdown Cover (standard with Marshmallow Plus, or added as an extra), you can contact the AA for help.

    • The AA can help recover your vehicle and assist with arranging a replacement key.

    • Important: You’ll need to cover all costs for the key replacement and any locksmith services, even if you have breakdown cover.

  3. How to contact the AA

    • Use the contact information provided in your Marshmallow app under 'Breakdown Cover'.

    • Do not contact a garage or locksmith directly if you want to use your AA cover—they won’t reimburse you.

  4. Don’t have breakdown cover?

    • You’ll need to arrange your own locksmith service.

    • Make sure the locksmith is registered and provides vehicle-specific services for key cutting and reprogramming.

Tips for future peace of mind

  • Keep a spare key in a secure place at home.

  • Consider attaching a key tracker to help locate your keys quickly if lost.
