What should I do if I breakdown in the UK or Europe?

This article is for customers who need guidance during a breakdown.

Updated this week

If you're in the UK:

  1. Move to a safe location if possible.

  2. Turn on your hazard lights.

  3. Make sure everyone exits the vehicle safely.

  4. Call the AA on the UK 24 hour emergency helpline: 03300 413675. Have your membership details ready.

Your cover level will determine what happens next:

  • Roadside: The AA will try to fix your car on the spot or tow you to a nearby garage (within 10 miles).

  • National: If needed, you'll be towed to any single UK location of your choice.

If you're in Europe (European cover only):

  1. Follow local safety laws β€” use a warning triangle and wear a high-vis vest.

  2. Contact the local emergency number if needed.

  3. Call the European 24 hour emergency helpline: 00800 4243 2444 (this may incur international call charges).

You may be eligible for:

  • Local towing

  • Help finding spare parts

  • Emergency accommodation or travel

  • Vehicle recovery to the UK or your destination

If you experience difficulties, please use the following numbers;

  • If in France calling on a French landline, call: 04 72 17 12 03
