What should I do if I’ve broken down but don’t have Breakdown Cover?

This article is for customers who need help after breaking down but don’t have Marshmallow Breakdown Cover included in their policy.

If you’ve broken down and didn’t add Breakdown Cover to your Marshmallow policy, here’s what you can do:

Step 1: Get to safety

  • If your car has stopped working, try to move it to a safe place, such as the side of the road.

  • Turn on your hazard lights.

  • Make sure you and any passengers exit the vehicle safely and wait away from the road.

Step 2: Arrange assistance

You’ll need to organise help yourself, as Marshmallow can’t provide breakdown recovery if it’s not included in your policy.

Here are some options:

  • Call a local garage or mechanic for assistance.

  • Use a pay-as-you-go recovery service, like the AA or RAC.

  • Consider purchasing immediate cover from a provider like the AA or RAC (some may offer emergency assistance as part of a new policy).

Please note: Marshmallow isn’t affiliated with any recovery providers outside of the Breakdown Cover we offer through the AA, so always check terms before buying.

Step 3: Add cover for the future

Breakdowns can happen at any time—if you don’t have Breakdown Cover but want peace of mind for the future, consider:

  • Getting a new Marshmallow quote that includes the right level of Breakdown Cover.

  • Buying standalone cover from a third-party provider.

We’re unable to add Breakdown Cover mid-policy, so a new policy would be required if you want to include it with Marshmallow.
