Can I get insured with a provisional licence?

Yes, Marshmallow now covers some drivers who only hold a UK provisional driving licence.

To check if you're eligible, simply get a quote on Compare the Market. You'll be able to enter your provisional licence details as part of the quote process.

If you're eligible, there's no time limit on how long you’ve held your provisional licence — whether it's been a month or a few years, you’re welcome to apply.

I had an international licence—can I still apply?

If you previously held an international driving licence that’s now no longer valid in the UK, you may still be able to get insurance with your UK provisional licence. However, you must follow all the UK rules for provisional licence holders.

You can read the official DVSA guidance here: Driving lessons and learning to drive – GOV.UK

What rules do I need to follow with a provisional licence?

When driving with a UK provisional licence, you must be supervised at all times.

Your accompanying driver must:

  • Be at least 21 years old

  • Have held a full driving licence for at least 3 years

  • Their licence must be from the UK, EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein

  • Be qualified to drive the same type of vehicle (manual or automatic)

You must also display L plates on your vehicle, and you're not allowed to drive on motorways unless with an approved driving instructor in a dual-control car.
