Can I change my job title or address to lower my premium?

This article is for Marshmallow customers who want to understand the risks of adjusting personal details to reduce insurance costs.

Updated today

It may be tempting to slightly alter your details when getting an insurance quote to get a cheaper price. But changing things like your job title, address, or how your car is used without being truthful is known as quote manipulation, and it can lead to serious consequences.

What is quote manipulation?

Quote manipulation means deliberately entering inaccurate information to reduce your insurance premium or to get a quote when you might otherwise be declined. Even if the changes seem minor, they can count as insurance fraud.

Examples include:

  • Using a safer-sounding job title that doesn’t reflect what you actually do

  • Giving your work address instead of your home address

  • Saying you park your car on a driveway when you actually park it on the road

  • Reducing your mileage or omitting details to make your risk look lower

Why is this a problem?

When you apply for insurance, we use your details to assess your risk and calculate a fair price. If your information isn’t accurate, your quote doesn’t match the reality—and that affects your cover.

Consequences of quote manipulation:

  • Your policy may be cancelled or declared void

  • Your claims may be denied, even if you’ve paid for cover

  • You may have trouble getting insurance in the future

  • The incident could be recorded in anti-fraud databases
