What’s the difference between updating a registration plate and changing a vehicle?

For Marshmallow customers who need to know when to update their registration plate versus when to change their vehicle details.

Updated today

When should I update my registration plate?

You should update your registration plate if you:

  • Have added a personalised plate (also known as a private plate).

  • Have changed your standard registration plate through the DVLA.

This change keeps your car the same, but updates the plate information on your insurance policy.

When should I change my vehicle?

You should change your vehicle if:

  • You’ve bought a new car.

  • You’ve sold or scrapped your old vehicle.

  • You want to insure a different car entirely.

This update replaces the car on your policy, not just the plate.

Where do I make these changes?

  • To update your plate: Go to Manage your vehicle > Add personalised plate in the Marshmallow app.

  • To change your vehicle: Select Manage your vehicle > Change vehicle.

Both updates can be made in the app. Just follow the steps provided once you select the option.
