Why can't I change my vehicle in the app?

This article is for policyholders who are trying to update their vehicle details in the Marshmallow app.

Updated this week

There are a few common reasons why you might not be able to change your vehicle in the app. Don’t worry—most of these are easy to understand, and we’ll explain what you can do next.

1. The new vehicle doesn’t meet our cover criteria

We can’t cover every vehicle. Sometimes the car you're trying to add isn’t acceptable for your current policy. This can happen if the new vehicle is:

  • Over a certain value or age

  • Extensively modified

  • Considered high risk by our underwriters

  • Not roadworthy or properly registered

What you can do: Check that the vehicle is standard (not modified), under 25 years old, the estimated annual mileage is less than 75,000 miles. If your car meets those points and you’re still stuck, please get in touch with us.

2. You've reached the limit for vehicle changes

We allow a limited number of vehicle changes during a policy year. If you've already changed vehicles several times, the app might stop you from making more.

Why we do this: Frequent changes can affect how your price is calculated, and our policies are designed for drivers who aren’t switching cars often.

What you can do: If you've only changed your car once or twice and are now adding a private plate, you're probably fine. But if you've had more than 3 vehicle updates already, this could be why the app is blocking the change.

3. The car can’t be found in our vehicle search

Sometimes newer vehicles or those with rare trim levels don’t appear in our system when you search by registration number.

What you can do: Try entering your registration number again later—it may take time for the DVLA to update. If it’s still not showing, we might be able to add the car manually. You’ll need to speak to customer support and share the full details of the vehicle.
