How can I keep both my old and new cars insured during a transition?

This article is for customers who need to temporarily insure two cars while switching from one vehicle to another.

Can I insure two cars at once with Marshmallow?

No. Marshmallow policies cover only one vehicle at a time. That means your policy will only cover the car currently listed in your policy schedule and Certificate of Motor Insurance.

When you change the insured vehicle on your policy, the new car becomes the insured vehicle from the date you choose. From that point on, the old car is no longer covered.

What if I still need to drive my old car?

If you plan to drive your old car until your new one is ready, you have two options:

1. Delay the vehicle change

Wait until you’re finished using your old car before making the change to your new vehicle. Your old car will remain insured until the new car becomes the insured vehicle.

  • This works well if your new car hasn’t arrived yet or you're still selling the old one.

  • Just be sure to select the correct future date when you update your policy.

2. Take out a separate policy for the old car

If you need to drive both cars during the transition period, you’ll need to insure the second vehicle elsewhere.

  • You could take out a short-term insurance policy for the old car.

  • Marshmallow doesn't offer temporary cover at the moment. Some of our other customers have been able to find short-term cover from other providers,

⚠️ If neither car is insured correctly, you could be driving without valid insurance—which is a criminal offence under UK law.
